Vertical Machining Centers (VMC)

A vertical machining center holds the cutting tool in a spindle that points straight down at the table. The part sits on the table in a vise or a fixture, the machine moves in X, Y and Z, and a magazine changes tools as the program calls for them. It is the most common kind of machining center because the setup is easy to see and to reach, and one machine covers plate work, mould and die work, fixtures and general job-shop parts.

The limits come from the same layout. Chips fall onto the part and stay there, and only the top face is reachable without a rotary table or a second setup. A horizontal machining center turns the spindle on its side, lets the chips drop away and reaches several faces of a part on a pallet. A 5-axis machining center tilts the part or the head to reach angled features in one clamping. Large bridge and gantry machines with a vertical spindle are listed here as well.

Start with the travels and the table: its size and the load it carries. Then the spindle. Taper, top speed, power and torque together decide whether the machine suits small tools in aluminium or heavy cuts in steel. Tool capacity, the largest tool the changer accepts and the rapid traverse rates matter for cycle time. Options change these figures, so check whether a listed spindle speed is the standard one.
