Overview

The Fehlmann PICOMAX 56 TOP is a 3-axis milling and drilling machine that can be run two ways: as a CNC machine under a Heidenhain TNC 620, or by hand with a drilling lever and handwheels. TOP stands for Touch Or Program. Travels are 500 mm (19.7 in) in X and 400 mm (15.7 in) in both Y and Z, over a 908 x 480 mm (35.7 x 18.9 in) clamping surface.

The manual side is how Fehlmann expects one-off jobs to be done. A hole pattern, a pocket or a thread on a single part is made with the TOP functions and the drilling lever without writing a program, and the maker says operators manage this after a short training period even without programming knowledge. When the part is complex, the same machine runs it from the TNC 620 with graphically supported cycles.

The cooled motor spindle runs 50 - 12,000 rpm with 9.5 kW (12.7 hp) at S6 (40% ED), and Fehlmann quotes a torque of 60 Nm and milling and drilling in steel up to Ø 40 mm. Tools are changed by hand on the standard machine. An automatic tool changer with 20 or 30 pockets is an option, and so is a CNC dividing unit for 4-axis work, which the table is large enough to pair with a tailstock.

It is a small machine: 1.7 / 1.9 / 2.5 m (width / depth / height) and 3,050 kg (6,724 lb) without the tool changer, or 3,250 kg (7,165 lb) with the 20-pocket changer. The table-to-spindle-nose distance is 120 - 520 mm. If the parts are long, the PICOMAX 56L TOP stretches X travel to 800 mm on a 1,400 x 480 mm table.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Runs as a CNC machine or manually with a drilling lever and handwheels
  • Heidenhain TNC 620 multi-touch control with graphically supported cycles
  • Cooled motor spindle, 50 - 12,000 rpm and 9.5 kW (12.7 hp), with 60 Nm of torque
  • 908 x 480 mm (35.7 x 18.9 in) clamping surface takes several clamping setups at once
  • Direct path measuring systems on the axes
  • Compact: 1.7 m wide and 1.9 m deep, 3,050 kg (6,724 lb) without tool changer

Limitations

  • The automatic tool changer, with 20 or 30 pockets, is optional; the base machine has manual tool change
  • X travel is 500 mm (19.7 in); long parts need the PICOMAX 56L TOP with 800 mm
  • Spindle power is 9.5 kW (12.7 hp), with drilling in steel quoted up to Ø 40 mm
  • The specification states no rapid traverse or feed rate

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does TOP mean on the PICOMAX 56 TOP?

Touch Or Program. It is Fehlmann's name for an operating concept that combines CNC controlled 3-axis machining with manual operation using a drilling lever and handwheels. The operator chooses per task: touch the handwheels for a simple cut, or program the Heidenhain TNC 620 for a complex one.

02 Do I need to program the PICOMAX 56 TOP?

Not for simple work. Fehlmann designed the TOP functions for milling, drilling and threading on single parts without time-consuming programming, and says operators can run the machine after a short initial training period even without previous programming knowledge. Complex parts are programmed on the TNC 620 with graphically supported cycles.

03 Does the PICOMAX 56 TOP have a tool changer?

Only as an option. The standard machine is arranged for quick manual tool changes. An automatic tool changer for 20 or 30 tools can be ordered, and with the 20-pocket changer the weight rises from 3,050 kg (6,724 lb) to 3,250 kg (7,165 lb).

04 What are the spindle figures of the PICOMAX 56 TOP?

A cooled motor spindle with a speed range of 50 - 12,000 rpm and 9.5 kW (12.7 hp) at S6 (40% ED). Fehlmann also quotes a torque of 60 Nm and gives milling and drilling in steel up to Ø 40 mm as the capacity. The distance from table to spindle nose is 120 - 520 mm.

05 What is the difference between the PICOMAX 56 TOP and the PICOMAX 56 mill?

Both pages list the same travels, table, spindle and Heidenhain TNC 620. The difference is the manual operating concept. The PICOMAX 56 TOP is worked by hand with a drilling lever and handwheels through the TOP functions. The PICOMAX 56 mill has three handwheels for X, Y and Z and a key switch that turns it into a simple conventional machine, which Fehlmann aims at vocational training.
