Overview

The KAAST V-Mill 810 is a 40-taper vertical machining center with 815 mm (32 in) of X travel, 540 mm (21 in) of Y and 560 mm (22 in) of Z. Its 12,000 rpm spindle is rated 26 kW (35 hp), and the control is the Fanuc 0i-MF.

The table measures 950 x 480 mm (37.4 x 19 in) and carries 1,080 kg (2,380 lb). Y travel is longer than the table is deep, so the spindle covers the whole table front to back. In X it is the other way round: the table is longer than the travel, and the outer ends are for clamping, not cutting.

KAAST lists a positioning accuracy of ±0.01 mm (±0.0004 in) and a repeatability of ±0.003 mm (±0.00012 in). Rapids are 44 m/min (1,730 in/min) in X and Y and 25 m/min (980 in/min) in Z. The V-Mill 1630 shares the spindle but is listed at ±0.015 mm (±0.0006 in) and 33 m/min (1,300 in/min) in X and Y, so the smaller machine is the quicker and tighter of the two.

The magazine holds 28 tools, or 36 as an option, on a BT40 or CAT40 taper. A tool can be up to 65 mm (2.6 in) in diameter with all pockets full, 130 mm (5.1 in) with the adjacent pockets empty, 250 mm (9.8 in) long and 7 kg (15 lb). Spindle nose to table distance is 75-635 mm (3-25 in), and the spindle center sits 550 mm (21.7 in) from the column.

The footprint is 2,900 x 2,240 mm (114 x 88 in) and the weight 5,900 kg (13,000 lb); no height is listed. Where the parts are lighter, the VF-Mill A 7L is the smaller alternative at 4,500 kg (9,900 lb), with a 10,000 rpm, 15 kW (20 hp) spindle and a table load of 500 kg (1,100 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 26 kW (35 hp) at the spindle with 12,000 rpm, against 15 kW (20 hp) and 10,000 rpm on the VF-Mill A 7L
  • 1,080 kg (2,380 lb) table load on a 950 x 480 mm (37.4 x 19 in) table
  • 44 m/min (1,730 in/min) rapids in X and Y
  • Positioning accuracy of ±0.01 mm (±0.0004 in) and repeatability of ±0.003 mm (±0.00012 in)
  • Choice of BT40 or CAT40 taper, with a 36-tool magazine as an option

Limitations

  • Z rapid is 25 m/min (980 in/min), well below the 44 m/min (1,730 in/min) of X and Y
  • The standard magazine holds 28 tools; 36 tools are an option
  • Tools are limited to 7 kg (15 lb) and, with a full magazine, 65 mm (2.6 in) in diameter
  • X travel of 815 mm (32 in) is half the 1,630 mm (64 in) of the V-Mill 1630

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels and table size of the V-Mill 810?

Travels are 815 mm (32 in) in X, 540 mm (21 in) in Y and 560 mm (22 in) in Z. The table is 950 x 480 mm (37.4 x 19 in) and is rated for 1,080 kg (2,380 lb). Spindle nose to table distance runs from 75 to 635 mm (3-25 in).

02 What spindle does the V-Mill 810 have?

A 12,000 rpm spindle rated 26 kW (35 hp), with a BT40 or CAT40 taper. The listed figures give no torque value, so ask KAAST for the torque curve if the work is heavy cutting at low speed.

03 How many tools does the V-Mill 810 hold, and how large can they be?

28 tools as standard and 36 as an option. Maximum tool diameter is 65 mm (2.6 in), or 130 mm (5.1 in) when the adjacent pockets are empty. Maximum tool length is 250 mm (9.8 in) and maximum tool weight 7 kg (15 lb).

04 How accurate is the V-Mill 810?

KAAST lists a positioning accuracy of ±0.01 mm (±0.0004 in) and a repeatability of ±0.003 mm (±0.00012 in). The table does not name the standard those values are measured to, which is worth asking if the figures go into an acceptance test.

05 How does the V-Mill 810 differ from the V-Mill 1630?

Size and speed. The V-Mill 1630 is listed with a 1,750 x 800 mm (69 x 31.5 in) table, a 2,760 kg (6,085 lb) table load and a weight of 12,465 kg (27,480 lb), and uses the same 12,000 rpm, 26 kW (35 hp) spindle. The V-Mill 810 has a 950 x 480 mm (37.4 x 19 in) table, carries 1,080 kg (2,380 lb) and weighs 5,900 kg (13,000 lb).
