Overview

The Brother TC-20B is a compact column-traverse tapping center designed for high-speed drilling, tapping, and light milling of small parts. It uses a column traverse (moving column) design rather than a moving table, allowing faster axis acceleration and lower machine footprint for small part production.

X/Y/Z travels are 300 x 200 x 200 mm (11.8 x 7.9 x 7.9 in). The spindle runs at 10,000 rpm standard with a 1.5 kW motor on BT30 taper. Optional spindle speeds up to 30,000 rpm are available for micro-machining and aluminum. The 16-tool ATC provides automatic tool changes for mixed drilling and tapping programs.

The column traverse design accelerates the column (carrying Z and spindle) rather than the workpiece, reducing moving mass and enabling faster cycle times on small parts. This is the defining characteristic of the TC series versus the Speedio S/U series which use a moving table.

The CNC-B00 control is purpose-built for the TC series with tapping cycle optimization and high-speed look-ahead. Machine weight is approximately 900 kg with a 900 x 1,300 mm footprint — one of the smallest capable VMC footprints available.

The TC-20B targets manufacturers of small precision parts: electronics, medical, watches, and aerospace fasteners where floor space and cycle time are both critical constraints.

New machines price $40,000-$60,000. Used units from 2012-2022 trade $18,000-$40,000.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Extremely compact footprint — under 1 m wide — for dense shop floors
  • Column traverse design reduces moving mass for faster acceleration
  • Optional 30,000 rpm spindle for micro-machining and aluminum
  • Very low entry cost relative to full VMC capability
  • CNC-B00 control is specialized for tapping and drilling optimization
  • Light machine weight requires no special foundation

Limitations

  • Limited to small parts under 30 kg — not for medium or large work
  • 200 mm Z-travel is among the shortest in any VMC class
  • 1.5 kW spindle motor limits cutting force in harder materials
  • 16-tool ATC capacity is minimal for complex programs
  • Column traverse limits rigidity compared to bridge-style VMCs

Best For

Small electronics components requiring precision drilling and tapping Watch and instrument components with micro-scale features Medical fasteners, screws, and small implant components Aerospace fasteners and precision hardware High-volume drilling and tapping of small castings and forgings Shops with severe floor space constraints needing a capable small VMC

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Cost?

New $40,000-$60,000. Used $18,000-$40,000.

02 What is column traverse?

The column (carrying the spindle) moves in X, rather than the table. This reduces moving mass for faster acceleration on small parts.

03 Is 30,000 rpm standard?

No, 10,000 rpm is standard. The 30,000 rpm high-speed spindle is a factory option for micro-machining applications.

04 TC-20B vs Speedio S300?

The TC-20B is smaller, lighter, and cheaper — better for tiny parts and tapping-focused work. The S300 offers more travel, tool capacity, and milling rigidity.

05 What control does it use?

Brother CNC-B00, designed specifically for the TC series with built-in tapping cycle optimization.
