Overview

The Johnford DMC-3100 is a three metre double column machining center with a BT-40 / CAT-40 spindle: 3,050 mm (120 in) of X travel, 1,300 mm (51.2 in) of Y and 800 mm of Z over a 3,200 x 1,100 mm table. It weighs 26,800 kg (59,000 lb).

From this length upward, the X axis slows down. Rapid traverse is 12 / 15 / 12 m/min (472 / 591 / 472 ipm), so the table moves at 12 m/min while the cross axis keeps the 15 m/min of the shorter models on the frame. Cutting feed runs 1~10,000 mm/min. On a part three metres long the X rapid sets how long the spindle takes to return for a tool change, and programs are worth planning around it.

What stays constant is the cross-section. Like the DMC-1600 and DMC-2100, the DMC-3100 has 1,300 mm (51.2 in) between columns, 150~950 mm (5.9~37.4 in) from spindle nose to table, and a 6,000 kg (13,200 lb) table load. The rating does not grow with length, which suits the long, comparatively light parts a 40-taper spindle is chosen for: aluminium beams and skins, rails, long plates and pattern work.

The spindle is either a 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) geared drive at 8,000 rpm or a 17 / 20 kW (22.8 / 26.8 hp) built-in HSK A63 spindle at 15,000, 18,000 or 20,000 rpm. Options for the series include linear scales on X, Y or Z and high pressure coolant through the spindle at 20 bar. Plan for 8,515 x 3,300 x 3,835 mm (335 x 130 x 151 in) of space, since the table needs its travel on both sides of the bridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the Johnford DMC-3100?

3,050 mm (120 in) in X, 1,300 mm (51.2 in) in Y and 800 mm in Z. The table is 3,200 x 1,100 mm and the distance between columns is 1,300 mm (51.2 in).

02 How fast are the DMC-3100 axes?

Rapid traverse is 12 / 15 / 12 m/min (472 / 591 / 472 ipm) in X, Y and Z. The DMC-2100, one size shorter, is listed at 15 / 15 / 12 m/min. Cutting feed is 1~10,000 mm/min on both.

03 What is the table load on the DMC-3100?

6,000 kg (13,200 lb). The machine itself weighs 26,800 kg (59,000 lb) and measures 8,515 x 3,300 x 3,835 mm (335 x 130 x 151 in).

04 Is there a No.50 version of the DMC-3100?

Yes. The DMC-3100H has a BT-50 / CAT-50 spindle with a 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) Hi Lo Gear drive and tools up to 15 kg (33 lb), on the same frame, table load and weight.
