Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Republic Lagun VBMA-1600 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Republic Lagun VBMA-1600 is the largest of the VBMA vertical bed mills: 63 in (1,600 mm) of X travel, 28 in (711 mm) in both Y and Z, and an 86.6 x 20 in (2,200 x 508 mm) table that takes 2,200 lb (998 kg).
Access is the argument the maker makes for it. Lagun Engineering says the open frame construction makes the mill suited to loading large or unusual parts, and with no enclosure in the way a crane or forklift can set a weldment or die block straight onto the table. The pendant control box has individual buttons for each function, and Fanuc 0i-MF controls are stated as standard.
Spindle power does not grow with the travels. The head has an NST#40 spindle with a 5 HP (3.73 kW) EVS, inverter driven motor and a listed speed of 3,600 rpm, plus 5.5 in (140 mm) of quill travel. A buyer should think of this machine as a way to reach a big part with ordinary cutters, working over a long day, not as a heavy roughing mill. Light finishing passes over a 63 in (1,600 mm) stroke are well within what it is built for.
Accuracy is quoted per length: positioning ± 0.0004 in/ft (± 0.010/300 mm) and repeating accuracy ± 0.0002 in/ft (± 0.005/300 mm). To hold that, the slideways, table and T-slot are hardened and ground, all ways are coated with turcite-B, and hardened and ground double-nut ball screws drive the three axes through 1:2 ratio timing belt boxes. Steel covers protect the Y and Z ways.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 63 in (1,600 mm) X travel with 28 in (711 mm) in Y and Z
- 86.6 x 20 in (2,200 x 508 mm) table rated for 2,200 lb (998 kg)
- Open frame construction for loading large or unusual parts, as the maker puts it
- EVS inverter driven 5 HP (3.73 kW) spindle motor
- Stated positioning accuracy of ± 0.0004 in/ft (± 0.010/300 mm)
Limitations
- Spindle is still 5 HP (3.7 kW) and 3,600 rpm, the same figures as the VBMA-1000
- Steel way covers are listed for Y and Z only
- No automatic tool changer is listed
- A 2,200 lb (998 kg) table limit is modest for a table 86.6 in long

Frequently Asked Questions
01
X travel is 63 in (1,600 mm), Y travel 28 in (711 mm) and Z travel 28 in (711 mm). The table measures 86.6 x 20 in (2,200 x 508 mm) and has a weight capacity of 2,200 lb (998 kg).
02
An NST#40 spindle with a 5 HP (3.73 kW) EVS, inverter driven motor, according to the feature list. The specification table gives 3,600 rpm and 5.5 in (140 mm) of quill travel.
03
Positioning accuracy of ± 0.0004 in/ft (± 0.010/300 mm) and repeating accuracy of ± 0.0002 in/ft (± 0.005/300 mm). The comparison table on the same page gives the same inch figures: 0.0004 in/ft and 0.0002 in/ft.
