Overview

The Johnford VMC-1300 is the smallest single-spindle machine in the Large VMC series, a geared 40-taper vertical machining center with travels of 1,300 x 850 x 800 mm (51.2 x 33.5 x 31.5 in). Its table measures 1,500 x 750 mm (59.1 x 29.5 in) and carries 3,270 kg (7,194 lb).

Put those numbers beside the SV series and the gap is clear. The largest SV, the SV-60, has more X travel but a table load of 1,700 kg (3,740 lb) and a weight of 11,000 kg (24,250 lb). The VMC-1300 is shorter in X, yet it weighs 13,500 kg (29,700 lb) and takes nearly twice the load. This is a machine for heavy workpieces of moderate length.

It is also a tall one. Z travel of 800 mm (31.5 in) and a spindle nose range of 150~950 mm (5.9~37.4 in) accommodate deep mold blocks, tall fixtures or a trunnion. The spindle is 885 mm (34.8 in) from the column. The price of that envelope is speed: rapids are 18 / 18 / 12 m/min (709 / 709 / 472 ipm), and the spindle runs 80-8,000 rpm through an automatic Hi-Lo gearbox with a 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) motor.

Johnford supplies a 24-tool armless changer as standard and lists arm type changers of 24 or 32 tools as options. The same frame is sold with a 50-taper head as the VMC-1300HD and with two spindles as the VMC-1300-2H.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z travel with up to 950 mm (37.4 in) under the spindle nose
  • 3,270 kg (7,194 lb) table load on a 1,500 x 750 mm (59.1 x 29.5 in) table
  • 13,500 kg (29,700 lb) machine weight for 1,300 mm (51.2 in) of X travel
  • Automatic Hi-Lo gearbox on the 80-8,000 rpm spindle
  • Y travel of 850 mm (33.5 in), wider than the table is deep

Limitations

  • Z rapid is 12 m/min (472 ipm) and X-Y rapid 18 m/min (709 ipm)
  • 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) spindle motor is small for a machine of this weight
  • Height of 3,535 mm (139.2 in) may not clear a low roof or crane hook
  • 40-taper tools are limited to 10 kg (22 lb) and 320 mm (12.6 in)

Best For

Tall mold blocks and die components under 3,270 kg (7,194 lb) Trunnion or tall-fixture setups that need 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z Heavy parts finished with 40-taper tooling Shops stepping up from the SV series for load capacity rather than X travel
