Overview

The Hurco VMX24Di is the direct-drive variant of the VMX24i, swapping the belt-driven 12K RPM spindle for a 15,000 RPM inline direct-drive unit. The 'D' designation across Hurco's lineup always means direct-drive — no belts, no gears, just motor coupled to spindle for smoother, faster, more thermally stable operation.

Travels are 610 x 508 x 610 mm (24 x 20 x 24 in), identical to the VMX24i. The spindle upgrade is the key difference: 15,000 RPM through a Big Plus CAT 40 producing 15.7 kW (21 hp) and 119 Nm (88 ft-lbs) of torque. The power increase over the standard VMX24i's 18 hp comes from the direct-drive motor's higher efficiency. The tradeoff is lower torque at low RPM — 88 vs 157 ft-lbs — because there's no belt multiplication.

For shops cutting primarily aluminum, the VMX24Di is the better choice. The extra 3,000 RPM lets you run 1/2" endmills at higher surface speeds, and the direct-drive delivers smoother rotation that shows in surface finish quality. For steel roughing with large cutters, the standard VMX24i's belt-driven torque advantage matters more.

The 40-tool arm-type ATC, table dimensions of 914 x 508 mm (36 x 20 in), and 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) table load are shared with the VMX24i. Construction is the same hybrid roller guide / box way design. Rapids hit 38 m/min (1,496 ipm) on X and Y, 32 m/min (1,260 ipm) on Z.

At approximately 5,000 kg (11,023 lb), the VMX24Di is marginally heavier than the VMX24i due to the direct-drive spindle assembly. WinMax control is standard. The direct-drive spindle reduces maintenance — no belt replacement intervals, no belt tension adjustments — which adds up over the machine's life.

Pricing runs $95,000-$125,000 new, roughly $10K more than the belt-driven VMX24i. Used VMX24Di machines from 2016-2021 trade in the $50,000-$80,000 range.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 15,000 RPM inline direct-drive spindle delivers superior surface finish and thermal stability
  • 21 hp direct-drive is more powerful than the standard VMX24i's 18 hp belt-driven spindle
  • No belts to replace or tension — reduced maintenance cost and downtime over machine life
  • 40-tool ATC matches the VMX24i's capacity for complex multi-operation jobs
  • 610 mm (24 in) Z-travel accommodates tall fixtures and stacked vise setups
  • Direct-drive eliminates belt harmonics that can cause chatter marks at high RPM

Limitations

  • 119 Nm (88 ft-lbs) torque is 44% less than the VMX24i's 213 Nm, limiting heavy roughing in steel
  • Roughly $10K price premium over the standard VMX24i for the direct-drive spindle
  • Lower torque makes large face mills and inserted cutters less effective in tough materials
  • Hurco's dealer network remains smaller than Haas and Mazak in most regions
  • WinMax skills don't transfer to Fanuc, Siemens, or Haas-based shops

Best For

Shops cutting primarily aluminum that need higher RPM and better surface finish Aerospace job shops machining aluminum airframe components and brackets Medical device shops cutting aluminum, PEEK, and other high-RPM materials Mold shops doing semi-finishing and finishing passes where surface quality is critical Shops that value reduced spindle maintenance over maximum low-end torque High-mix job shops running 60%+ aluminum work where speed matters more than brute force

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Hurco VMX24Di cost?

New base price starts around $95,000, roughly $10K more than the standard VMX24i. Configured with through-spindle coolant, probing, and options, expect $110,000-$125,000. Used VMX24Di machines from 2016-2021 sell for $50,000-$80,000.

02 How does the VMX24Di compare to the standard VMX24i?

The VMX24Di spins 3,000 RPM faster (15K vs 12K), has 3 more horsepower (21 vs 18 hp), and eliminates belts for smoother operation. The VMX24i has nearly double the torque (157 vs 88 ft-lbs) at low RPM. Choose the Di for aluminum and finish work, the standard for steel roughing.

03 Is the VMX24Di good for steel cutting?

For light to moderate steel work — drilling, tapping, finishing passes, light roughing — it's fine. For aggressive roughing with large cutters in P20, H13, or stainless, the standard VMX24i's 213 Nm of torque is significantly better. The Di trades low-end grunt for high-speed finesse.

04 How much maintenance does the direct-drive spindle save?

Belt-driven spindles typically need belt replacement every 3,000-5,000 hours ($200-400 per change) and periodic tension adjustments. The direct-drive eliminates both. Over a 10-year machine life, you save $1,000-2,000 in belt costs plus the associated downtime.

05 Can I tell the difference in surface finish between the Di and standard?

At spindle speeds above 8,000 RPM, yes. Belt harmonics on the standard VMX24i can produce subtle witness marks on finished surfaces. The direct-drive VMX24Di produces cleaner finishes at high RPM. Below 6,000 RPM, the difference is negligible.
