Overview

AXA describes its PFZ as the specialist for particularly large and solid workpieces machined with a vertical spindle, and the PFZ 50 is the version with the spindle to match. It is an SK 50 large gantry machining centre with a feed force of 12,000 N and five spindle drives on the list, the strongest delivering 820 Nm.

The drive list is worth reading closely, because the standard unit is not the obvious pick for every shop. Drive no. 161 gives 540 Nm from 28 kW at 40% DC: high torque, low power, suited to slow heavy cuts. Drive no. 163 has the same torque with 57 kW. Drives no. 131 (286 Nm, 45 kW) and no. 133 (355 Nm, 56 kW) trade torque for speed, with up to 9,000 rpm optional. Drive no. 182 tops the range with 820 Nm and 81 kW at 4,000 rpm.

Size is chosen from ranges. X runs from 3,000 mm to 10,000 mm, Y from 1,500 mm to 3,000 mm and Z from 800 mm to 1,500 mm, on a table up to 3,000 mm wide. The table load is 1,500 kg/m², and 2,000 kg/m² is an optional feature that the PFZ 40 does not list.

As on all PFZ machines, axis speeds are moderate: 15/15/10 m/min, optionally 20/20/15 m/min. The stationary tool changer holds 22 tools up to 110 mm in diameter, and AXA attributes short changing times to a double gripping arm and a tool transfer placed centrally in the X-axis.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Which spindle drive should be chosen on the PFZ 50?

It depends on the cut. No. 161 (standard) and no. 163 both give 540 Nm, with 28 kW and 57 kW respectively and up to 7,500 rpm optional. No. 131 and no. 133 give 286 Nm and 355 Nm with up to 9,000 rpm optional. No. 182 gives 820 Nm and 81 kW at 4,000 rpm. All ratings are at 40% DC.

02 How big can a PFZ 50 be?

X travel ranges from 3,000 mm to 10,000 mm (118.1 to 393.7 in), Y from 1,500 mm to 3,000 mm and Z from 800 mm to 1,500 mm. The table is 1,500 mm to 3,000 mm wide with 22 mm T-slots at 660 mm spacing. The distance from table to spindle nose is given as 230 mm.

03 What drives the linear axes?

AXA lists ball screws or rack and pinion drive in all linear axes, with drives and guideways protected. The guideways are hardened precision steel slideways mounted on manually scraped or ground surfaces with Turcite coatings. Direct measuring systems are fitted on X, Y and Z.

04 Is the PFZ 50 available in special configurations?

AXA's examples of use include a PFZ with additional turning equipment, a PFZ without machine table and a PFZ as a pallet machine. The data sheet adds that its figures refer to the standard version and that extensions and modifications depend on the overall configuration and application.
