Overview

With 800 mm (31.5 in) of X travel, the ROMI D 800 is the first D Series vertical machining center to get the full production specification: an arm-type tool changer, 40 m/min (1,575 ipm) rapids, the Fanuc 0i-MF Plus i-HMI control and a choice of two spindles. Y and Z are 610 mm (24 in) and 640 mm (25 in).

Spindle choice is the main decision. The 10,000 rpm version has a 25 hp / 18.5 kW motor and 118 Nm (87 lb-ft). The 15,000 rpm version has a 20 hp / 15 kW motor and 102 Nm (75.2 lb-ft), with headstock cooling as standard. Torque falls only modestly with the faster spindle, so shops that cut aluminium and steel on the same machine lose little by taking it. Romi recommends BBT holders above 10,000 rpm.

The changer holds 30 / 48 tools and swaps them in 3.2 / 3.3 s tool to tool. Tools can be 75 mm (3 in) in diameter, or 127 mm (5 in) when the adjacent stations are empty, and up to 300 mm (11.9 in) long. Each may weigh 7 kg (15 lbs).

One thing to check against your parts: the table is 914 x 560 mm (36 x 22 in), which is only a little longer than the X stroke and no bigger than the table of the D 600. Load is 900 kg (2,000 lbs). If the fixture plate is longer than the table, the D 1000 is the next step. Installed power is 35 kVA, or 40 kVA with the faster spindle, and the machine weighs 6,600 kg (14,500 lbs) / 6,950 kg (15,300 lbs).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Should I order the 10,000 or the 15,000 rpm spindle on the ROMI D 800?

The 10,000 rpm headstock gives 25 hp / 18.5 kW and 118 Nm (87 lb-ft). The 15,000 rpm headstock gives 20 hp / 15 kW and 102 Nm (75.2 lb-ft), includes headstock cooling and needs 40 kVA instead of 35 kVA. Romi recommends BBT holders for speeds over 10,000 rpm.

02 How many tools does the D 800 hold?

The automatic arm changer is offered with 30 / 48 tools. Maximum tool weight is 7 kg (15 lbs), and the magazine as a whole may carry 150 kg (330 lbs) / 240 kg (530 lbs). Tool change time is 3.2 / 3.3 s tool to tool.

03 What are the travels and table size of the D 800?

X is 800 mm (31.5 in), Y is 610 mm (24 in) and Z is 640 mm (25 in). The table surface is 914 x 560 mm (36 x 22 in) with 5 T-slots and takes 900 kg (2,000 lbs). Spindle nose to table distance is 110 to 750 mm (4.3 to 30 in).

04 What electrical supply does the D 800 need?

Romi lists the electrical installation for 400VCA/50-60Hz. Total installed power is 35 kVA for the 10,000 rpm version and 40 kVA for the 15,000 rpm version. Floor area is 3,170 x 3,795 mm (125 x 150 in) without a chip conveyor.
