Overview

The Johnford SV-48 marks the point where the SV series changes casting. Travels grow to 1,220 x 710 x 630 mm (48 x 28 x 24.8 in), the table to 1,300 x 700 mm (51.2 x 27.6 in), and the spindle-to-column distance to 740 mm (29.1 in). The SV-41 below it has 640 mm (25.2 in) to the column and 610 mm (24 in) of Y.

Three things change with the bigger frame, and a buyer moving up from the smaller models should know all of them. First, the standard 40-taper drive is a 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) motor with a Hi-Lo gear, still at 60~10,000 rpm; the SV-33 and SV-41 use a gearless P motor. Second, rapid traverse is 24 / 24 / 24 m/min (945 / 945 / 945 ipm), slower in X and Y than the smaller machines but faster in Z. Third, table load rises to 1,500 kg (3,300 lb).

The gearbox matters most. It gives the SV-48 low-range torque for roughing steel without giving up 10,000 rpm in high range, which fits the larger parts a 710 mm Y axis invites. An oil cooler for the spindle and gearbox is standard. Optional spindles are the 12,000 rpm cartridge type, a 15,000 rpm direct drive in BBT-40, and a built-in HSK A63 unit at 15,000, 18,000 or 20,000 rpm.

Johnford lists the machine at 7,000 kg (15,400 lb) and 3,200 x 3,900 x 3,090 mm (126 x 154 x 122 in). The floor plan is nearly 4 m deep, so plan the chip conveyor and electrical cabinet access before the machine is placed.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 710 mm (28 in) of Y travel and a 700 mm deep table in a 40-taper machine
  • Hi-Lo gear drive is standard with the 60~10,000 rpm spindle, rated 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp)
  • Table load of 1,500 kg (3,300 lb)
  • Z rapid of 24 m/min (945 ipm) matches X and Y
  • Spindle nose to table distance extends to 730 mm (28.7 in)

Limitations

  • X and Y rapids are 24 m/min (945 ipm), slower than the 30 m/min of the SV-33 and SV-41
  • Depth of 3,900 mm (154 in) takes more floor than the smaller SV models
  • Tool limits stay at 10 kg (22 lb) and 320 mm (12.6 in) despite the larger envelope
  • The standard magazine is a 24-tool armless type

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the Johnford SV-48?

1,220 mm (48 in) in X, 710 mm (28 in) in Y and 630 mm (24.8 in) in Z, over a 1,300 x 700 mm (51.2 x 27.6 in) table. Spindle nose to table distance is 100~730 mm (3.94~28.7 in).

02 Does the SV-48 have a gearbox?

Yes. The standard spindle motor row reads 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) Hi-Lo Gear, with continuous and 30 min ratings, at a spindle speed of 60~10,000 rpm in BT/CAT-40. The standard accessories include an oil cooler for spindle and gearbox.

03 How does the SV-48 compare with the SV-41?

The SV-41 has 1,050 x 610 x 610 mm travels, a 1,200 kg (2,640 lb) table load and rapids of 30 / 30 / 20 m/min. The SV-48 has longer travels in all three axes, carries 1,500 kg (3,300 lb) and rapids at 24 m/min on every axis. Both are listed at 7,000 kg (15,400 lb).

04 Is there a 50-taper version of the SV-48?

Yes. The SV-48H has a BT/CAT-50 spindle at 60~6,000 rpm with an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) Hi-Lo gear drive and a 20-tool armless changer, on the same travels and table.
