Overview

Sixteen metres of X makes the Johnford SDMC-16000X4600X1400-W the largest machine with a published table on Johnford's site. It is a portal machining center with a movable crossbeam: 16,000 mm (630 in) in X, 4,600 mm (181.1 in) in Y, 1,400 mm (55.1 in) in Z and 2,200 mm (86.6 in) in W.

The W axis is what the suffix refers to, and it explains an unusual figure. Spindle nose to table distance runs from 400 to 4,000 mm (15.7~157.5 in), far more than the Z stroke, because the whole crossbeam climbs the columns. A low plate and a casting several metres tall can be machined on the same table. The crossbeam is slow, 1 m/min (39 ipm), since it is a positioning axis; X, Y and Z rapid at 10 m/min (394 ipm).

Everything about the spindle says heavy and slow. BT-50 taper, Ø100 mm (Ø4 in) spindle diameter, 3,000 rpm through a Hi-Lo Gear, 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp). The 50-tool arm type magazine takes cutters up to 250 mm (10 in) in diameter. This is a machine for ship engine frames, press crowns, large turbine casings and the bases of other heavy machines.

The table, 16,000 x 4,000 mm (630 x 157.5 in), is rated 3 ton/m². The columns stand 4,700 mm (185 in) apart, so the Y travel of 4,600 mm (181.1 in) covers nearly the whole opening.

At 183,500 kg (403,700 lb), 24,450 mm (963 in) long, 9,930 mm (391 in) wide and 8,215 mm (323.4 in) high, the building is part of the project.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 16,000 x 4,600 mm of X and Y travel over a 16,000 x 4,000 mm (630 x 157.5 in) table
  • W axis of 2,200 mm (86.6 in) gives 400~4,000 mm (15.7~157.5 in) between spindle nose and table
  • 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) Hi-Lo Gear spindle with a Ø100 mm (Ø4 in) spindle diameter
  • Tool diameter up to 250 mm (10 in)
  • Linear scales on the X axes are standard

Limitations

  • Spindle speed limited to 3,000 rpm
  • Rapids of 10 m/min (394 ipm) over a 16,000 mm axis
  • 8,215 mm (323.4 in) machine height
  • No cutting feed range is given in the maker's table

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the W stand for in SDMC-16000X4600X1400-W?

The W axis, the vertical travel of the crossbeam, which is 2,200 mm (86.6 in) on this machine. Combined with 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of Z it gives a spindle nose to table range of 400~4,000 mm (15.7~157.5 in).

02 How heavy is the SDMC-16000X4600X1400-W?

183,500 kg (403,700 lb). Its overall size is 24,450 mm (963 in) by 9,930 mm (391 in) by 8,215 mm (323.4 in), so foundation, crane and hall height have to be planned around it.

03 What spindle and tools does the SDMC-16000X4600X1400-W use?

A BT-50 spindle at 3,000 rpm with a Hi-Lo Gear and a 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) motor. The arm type changer holds 50 tools up to 250 mm (10 in) in diameter, 400 mm (16 in) long and 20 kg (44 lb).

04 How does the SDMC-16000X4600X1400-W compare with the SDMC-6000x2800x800?

The SDMC-6000x2800x800 has 6,000 mm (236.2 in) of X, 2,800 mm (110.2 in) of Y, a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) spindle at 6,000 rpm and weighs 63,000 kg (138,600 lb). The 16000 model has 16,000 mm (630 in) of X, 4,600 mm (181.1 in) of Y and a 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) spindle at 3,000 rpm.
