Overview

The Hartford MCW-10550 has 10,000 mm (393.7 in) of X travel and 5,500 mm (216.5 in) of Y over a fixed 10,000 x 4,000 mm (393.7 x 157.5 in) table. Its columns move along the part, and its cross-beam moves up and down.

That second motion, the W axis, is what the first letters of Hartford's description refer to: Moving Crossbeam. Travel is 1,800 mm, with 2,100 mm as an option. Hartford drives the beam with twin ballscrews and twin servo motors and states a positioning accuracy of 0.03 mm for the axis, adding that the beam may be positioned anywhere without restricting the machining area.

The practical benefit is reach without overhang. For a low part the beam comes down and the ram works with a short extension; for a tall part the beam goes up and clears it. A fixed-beam machine has to choose one height and live with a long ram on everything lower. Z travel on the MCW-10550 is 1,000 mm, or 1,200 or 1,400 mm.

The table is rated at 3,000 kg/m². Spindle options are a #50 gear head at 6,000 or 8,000 rpm and a 10,000 rpm hybrid, and the magazine takes 40 tools, optionally 62.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • W axis with twin ballscrews and twin servo motors, stated positioning accuracy 0.03 mm
  • Cross-beam can be set anywhere in its 1,800 mm travel to keep the ram short
  • 10,000 mm (393.7 in) of X travel over a fixed table
  • Optional 1,400 mm Z travel and 2,100 mm W travel for tall parts

Limitations

  • Table width of 4,000 mm; the MCW-10650 is 5,000 mm (196.9 in) wide
  • Load rating of 3,000 kg/m² must be checked against the footprint of dense parts
  • Base Z travel is 1,000 mm

Best For

Mixed work with both low and tall parts on one machine Ten-metre machine beds, frames and structural weldments Tall fabrications that need the cross-beam raised

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the W axis on the MCW-10550?

The vertical travel of the cross-beam. It is 1,800 mm as standard and 2,100 mm as an option. Hartford states the W axis has twin ballscrews and twin servo motors and a positioning accuracy of 0.03 mm.

02 How large is the MCW-10550 table?

10,000 x 4,000 mm (393.7 x 157.5 in). It is fixed, with the columns travelling 10,000 mm along it, and is rated at 3,000 kg/m². Y travel is 5,500 mm (216.5 in).

03 How does the MCW-10550 differ from the MCW-8550?

It is two metres longer. The MCW-8550 has 8,000 mm (315.0 in) of X travel and an 8,000 x 4,000 mm table; Y, Z and W travels, spindles and magazine are the same on both.
