Overview

The Haas VF-8SS is the super-speed version of the extra-large VF-8, combining 1,981 x 813 x 762 mm (78 x 32 x 30 in) of travel with a 12,000 RPM inline direct-drive spindle. With 78 inches of X-travel and high-speed cutting capability, the VF-8SS is the machine for shops machining very large aluminum parts where cycle time reduction is critical.

The 22.4 kW (30 hp) inline direct-drive spindle delivers 122 Nm (90 ft-lbf) of torque at 2,000 RPM while spinning to 12,000 RPM. The direct-drive design provides smoother operation and better surface finishes at high RPM compared to geared-head alternatives. The CT40/BT40/HSK-A63 taper accepts standard 40-taper tooling, preserving tooling compatibility across the shop.

The table measures 1,981 x 711 mm (78 x 28 in) with five T-slots on 125 mm centers and approximately 1,814 kg (4,000 lb) of load capacity. At roughly 10,886 kg (24,000 lb), the VF-8SS is a heavy machine that provides excellent vibration damping across the full 78-inch span.

Rapid traverse runs at approximately 25.4 m/min (1,000 ipm) on all axes, somewhat slower than the smaller SS models due to the greater mass and travel distance. The 30+1 SMTC posts 1.8-second tool-to-tool and 2.4-second chip-to-chip times. Max cutting feedrate is 21.2 m/min (833 ipm). The VF-8SS bridges the gap between the VF-6SS and the VF-9SS, offering extra-large format high-speed machining that competes with machines costing significantly more. Specs derived from Haas Automation published data for the VF-8 and SS platform.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 12,000 RPM spindle on a 78 x 32-inch envelope is the fastest Haas offers for extra-large aluminum parts
  • 1,981 mm (78 in) X-travel handles long parts that exceed the VF-6SS's 64-inch reach
  • 1.8-second tool-to-tool and 2.4-second chip-to-chip cut non-cutting overhead on multi-tool programs
  • 1,000 ipm rapids are dramatically faster than the standard VF-8's 762 ipm for reduced non-cutting time
  • 30 HP direct-drive spindle provides smooth operation at 12K RPM while retaining torque for occasional steel work
  • 10,886 kg machine mass provides excellent vibration control across the full 78-inch span

Limitations

  • 40-taper spindle limits heavy roughing in steel and cast iron; the VF-8/50 is better for hard materials
  • 1,000 ipm rapids are slower than the 1,200-1,400 ipm on smaller SS models due to greater machine mass and travel
  • 24,000 lb machine weight requires solid floor preparation, heavy rigging, and significant floor space
  • 30+1 tool capacity may constrain complex programs requiring many tools; 50+1 adds cost

Best For

Aerospace shops machining large aluminum structural plates, wing skins, and bulkheads up to 78 inches long Mold shops running large aluminum master patterns and cavity blocks at high speeds Job shops handling extra-large aluminum and mixed-material parts needing high-speed capability Production environments machining large automotive tooling, fixtures, and checking gauges from aluminum Shops upgrading from a standard VF-8 that need dramatic cycle time improvements on aluminum programs

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas VF-8SS cost?

Base price starts around $175,000. With through-spindle coolant, probing, chip conveyor, and common options, expect $210,000-$235,000.

02 How does the VF-8SS compare to the VF-6SS?

The VF-8SS adds 14 inches of X-travel (78 vs 64 in) and has a wider table. It costs roughly $60K more. Both share 12,000 RPM spindles and 30 HP power. Choose the VF-8SS when parts exceed the VF-6SS's 64-inch X reach.

03 Can the VF-8SS cut steel?

Yes. The 30 HP spindle with 122 Nm at 2,000 RPM handles mild steel and stainless. For heavy steel roughing with large tools, the VF-8/50 with its 40 HP, 50-taper spindle is a better choice.

04 Why are the rapids slower than the VF-6SS?

The VF-8SS moves more mass over a longer distance (78 vs 64 inches of X), which requires reduced rapid rates for reliable positioning. The 1,000 ipm rapids are still 31% faster than the standard VF-8's 762 ipm.
