Overview

A 12,000 rpm spindle moving at 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) over a 64 × 36 in (1,626 × 914 mm) table: that is the Haas VF-8SS in one line. Travels are 64 × 40 × 30 in (1,626 × 1,016 × 762 mm), and the SS speeds apply across all of it. Large aluminium plates with pockets and holes scattered over the whole surface are the natural work, because the machine spends less of the cycle getting from one feature to the next.

The comparison that matters is with its slower twin. The VF-8/40, on an equal table and equal travels, tops out at 8,100 rpm, rapids at 600 ipm (15.2 m/min) and feeds at up to 500 ipm (12.7 m/min), where the VF-8SS feeds at up to 833 ipm (21.2 m/min). The Z axis on the SS rapids at 945 ipm (24 m/min), a little under X and Y.

The catch is on the table. The VF-8SS is rated for 2,000 lb (907 kg) and the VF-8/40 for 4,000 lb (1,814 kg).
