Overview
The Haas GM-2 is the larger 3-axis gantry mill in the Haas GM lineup, stepping up from the GM-1 with an extended work envelope and increased Z-axis travel. It uses the same moving-bridge gantry architecture with a 40-taper milling spindle, but delivers a bigger machining area for shops working on larger composite structures, mold patterns, and aluminum components.
Travel is 3,683 x 2,223 x 998 mm (145 x 87.5 x 39.3 in). The GM-2 matches the GM-2-5AX's X and Y envelope but without the gimbal head rotary axes, making it a pure 3-axis machine with a massive work area. That Z-axis travel at 998 mm (39.3 in) is over three times the GM-1's 279 mm, enabling deeper cuts, thicker workpieces, and more complex 3D surface profiling.
The spindle is a 22.4 kW (30 hp) unit with a CT/BT 50 taper running at 7,500 RPM through a 2-speed gearbox, delivering 460 Nm (340 ft-lbf) of torque at 700 RPM. This is a substantial step up from the GM-1's 15 hp 40-taper spindle. The 50-taper and gearbox torque give the GM-2 genuine heavy-cutting capability in aluminum and even moderate steel work, not just composite trimming.
The table measures 3,658 x 1,829 mm (144 x 72 in) and supports 2,722 kg (6,000 lb). The 30+1 SMTC provides ample tool capacity. Rapids run at 12.0 m/min (472 ipm) on X, 48.0 m/min (1,889 ipm) on Y, and 30.0 m/min (1,181 ipm) on Z. Between columns is 1,905 mm (75 in).
At approximately $275,000-$340,000 configured, the GM-2 is the choice for shops that need the large gantry envelope with serious 3-axis metal cutting capability. It handles everything from large aluminum aerospace components to mold bases and heavy pattern work that the lighter GM-1 cannot tackle. Specs derived from Haas GM-2-5AX and VS-3 published data.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 145 x 87.5 x 39.3 inch travel provides a massive 3-axis work envelope for large parts on a gantry platform
- 50-taper spindle with 460 Nm of torque handles heavy aluminum cutting and moderate steel work, not just composites
- 998 mm Z-travel enables deep 3D profiling and thick workpiece machining that the GM-1 cannot reach
- 6,000 lb table load supports heavy fixtures, large mold patterns, and stacked workpieces
- 30+1 SMTC provides ample tool capacity for complex multi-operation jobs on large parts
- Gantry design keeps workpiece stationary while providing access to all sides of large components
Limitations
- 7,500 RPM max spindle speed limits high-speed finishing with small tools compared to the GM-2-5AX's 20,000 RPM
- Base price above $275K is a major investment, though it undercuts comparable European gantry mills significantly
- No rotary axes — shops needing 5-axis capability must step up to the GM-2-5AX
- 22,000 lb machine weight requires substantial foundation preparation and professional rigging
- 12 m/min X-axis rapids are moderate, adding traverse time on the longest parts

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base price starts around $275,000. With through-spindle coolant, probing, chip management, and production options, configured price runs $310,000-$340,000.
02
The GM-2 is a 3-axis machine with a 50-taper 7,500 RPM gearbox spindle optimized for heavy cutting. The GM-2-5AX adds B and C rotary axes with a gimbal head and 20,000 RPM HSK spindle for simultaneous 5-axis work. The GM-2 is better for heavy 3-axis aluminum cutting; the GM-2-5AX is for composite trimming and 5-axis profiling.
03
Both have 50-taper spindles and similar power. The GM-2 is a gantry design where the bridge moves over a stationary table, while the VS-3 is a column-type VMC with a moving table. The GM-2 has wider Y-travel (87.5 vs 50 in) but the VS-3 has more X-travel (150 vs 145 in). The gantry design is better for large, thin parts; the column design is better for heavy, compact workpieces.
04
The 50-taper spindle with 460 Nm of torque can handle moderate steel milling, face milling, and drilling. However, the gantry platform is fundamentally designed for composites and aluminum. For sustained heavy steel cutting, a column-type machine like the VS-3 provides better rigidity.
