Overview

The Fermat FG is a gantry-type milling machine with a movable portal. The table is fixed to the floor and the whole portal travels over it, 7,000/9,000/11,000/13,000 mm (275.6/354.3/433.1/511.8 in) in X depending on the length ordered. A milling headstock crosses the beam in Y and a ram brings the spindle down 1,550 mm (61.0 in) in Z.

A moving portal suits heavy and long parts for a simple reason: the workpiece never moves. Axis loads stay the same whether the table holds a light plate or a full-length mould base, and the floor space needed is little more than the table itself. Fermat lists the fixed table plate at 2,000/2,500/3,000 mm (78.7/98.4/118.1 in) wide and 6,000/8,000/10,000/12,000 mm (236.2/315.0/393.7/472.4 in) long. Every listed table length is shorter than the X travels, which leaves the portal room to clear the ends.

Y travel is 3,600/4,100/4,600 mm (141.7/161.4/181.1 in), wider than the widest table, so a side-cutting head can reach down both long faces of a part. Rapid feed is 15,000 mm/min (590.6 ipm) in X and Y and 20,000 mm/min (787.4 ipm) on the ram.

The spindle runs at 5,000/6,000 rpm on SK 50, BIG+ or HSK100. With a Heidenhain or Siemens control the motors are 43/60 kW or 53/77.9 kW (S1/S6), giving 917/1,274 Nm or 1,591/2,338 Nm. Milling heads are optional; the accessory list names a straight head, an automatic C-axis and a tool changer.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Moving portal over a fixed table: the workpiece stays still whatever it weighs
  • X travel up to 13,000 mm (511.8 in) with a table plate up to 12,000 mm (472.4 in) long
  • Y travel up to 4,600 mm (181.1 in), wider than the 3,000 mm (118.1 in) table
  • 5,000/6,000 rpm spindle with 53/77.9 kW (S1/S6) available
  • 20,000 mm/min (787.4 ipm) rapid feed on the 1,550 mm (61.0 in) ram

Limitations

  • Torque is limited to 1,591/2,338 Nm (S1/S6) with the larger motor
  • No table load figure is published for the fixed table plate
  • X and Y rapid feed is 15,000 mm/min (590.6 ipm)
  • Milling heads for side and angled work are optional accessories
06

Best For

Long plates, mould bases and machine beds up to 12,000 mm (472.4 in) Heavy parts that should not ride on a moving table Top-face milling and drilling at 5,000/6,000 rpm Wide parts within 4,600 mm (181.1 in) of Y travel

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the Fermat FG and FP?

The moving element. On the FG the portal travels over a fixed table, and Fermat calls it a gantry-type machine. On the FP the portal is a fixed bridge and the table moves under it. Both use a milling headstock on a ram with 1,550 mm (61.0 in) of Z travel and the same spindle and motor rows.

02 How big is the table of the Fermat FG?

The fixed table plate is 2,000/2,500/3,000 mm (78.7/98.4/118.1 in) wide and 6,000/8,000/10,000/12,000 mm (236.2/315.0/393.7/472.4 in) long. Fermat describes the machine as adjustable according to the dimensions of the workpiece, so the plate and travels are matched at order.

03 What spindle does the Fermat FG have?

A milling spindle on an SK 50, BIG+ or HSK100 taper with a maximum speed of 5,000/6,000 rpm. Motor options with a Heidenhain or Siemens CNC are 43/60 kW or 53/77.9 kW (S1/S6), with 917/1,274 Nm or 1,591/2,338 Nm of torque. The table has no spindle diameter row, so this is not a boring spindle with a quill.

04 How fast do the axes of the Fermat FG move?

Rapid feed is 15,000 mm/min (590.6 ipm) for the portal in X and the headstock in Y, and 20,000 mm/min (787.4 ipm) for the ram in Z. On a machine with up to 13,000 mm (511.8 in) of X, the portal traverse sets how long a full-length repositioning takes.
