Overview

The Fadal VMC 6032 is where the Fadal range changes scale. Travels are 60 in (1,524 mm) in X, 32 in (813 mm) in Y and 30 in (762 mm) in Z over a 61 x 30 in (1,549 x 762 mm) table, and the machine weighs 32,400 lb (14,697 kg). The VMC 4020, the next box way model down, weighs 12,140 lb (5,507 kg).

A Y axis of 32 in (813 mm) is long for a C-frame vertical, and Fadal's answer is what it calls a quad box way Y axis support structure: four ways under the saddle, giving full way contact at full stroke. In practice that means the table is supported the same way at the ends of Y as in the middle, which is where long-Y machines usually lose stiffness.

Table load is 4,400 lb (1,996 kg). The spindle on this version is the 40-taper one: CAT-40, 10,000 rpm, a dual belt two-range drive with 220 ft-lb (298 Nm) and 22.5 hp (16.8 kW) peak. Optional figures in the table are 300 ft-lb (407 Nm) and 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak, and a 15,000 rpm spindle is on the option list. Buyers who need a 50-taper spindle on this frame are looking at the VMC 6032/50T, a separate model with a 6,000 rpm geared head.

Axis speeds reflect the mass being moved. X and Y rapid at 787 ipm (20.0 m/min) and Z at 590 ipm (15.0 m/min), on 50 mm (2.0 in) ballscrews. The 24 tool dual arm changer takes 1.5 sec tool to tool and can be replaced by 30 or 40 tool units. Four chip augers are standard, three when the optional chain type conveyor is fitted. Floor space is 166 x 118 x 132 in (4,216 x 2,997 x 3,353 mm), or 220 in (5,588 mm) long with the conveyor.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 60 x 32 x 30 in (1,524 x 813 x 762 mm) of travel with a 4,400 lb (1,996 kg) table load
  • Quad box way Y axis support with full way contact at full stroke
  • 10,000 rpm CAT-40 spindle with 220 ft-lb (298 Nm) in a two-range dual belt drive
  • Four chip augers and a chip wash down system are standard
  • Spindle nose to table range of 5-35 in (127-889 mm) leaves room for tall fixtures

Limitations

  • Rapids of 787 ipm (20.0 m/min) in X and Y and 590 ipm (15.0 m/min) in Z are slow for light, high-volume parts
  • A 22.5 hp (16.8 kW) peak, 40-taper spindle is small for the size of part the table can hold
  • Needs floor space of 166 x 118 in (4,216 x 2,997 mm) and a foundation for 32,400 lb (14,697 kg)
  • Tool weight is limited to 15 lb (6.8 kg), which excludes large face mills and boring bars

Best For

Large plates, mold bases and weldments up to 60 in (1,524 mm) long Wide parts that need the full 32 in (813 mm) of Y travel Big aluminium or steel parts finished with 40-taper tooling at up to 10,000 rpm Several vises or a long fixture plate on a 61 x 30 in (1,549 x 762 mm) table

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big is the work envelope of the Fadal VMC 6032?

60 in (1,524 mm) in X, 32 in (813 mm) in Y and 30 in (762 mm) in Z. The table is 61 x 30 in (1,549 x 762 mm) with five T-slots and a 4,400 lb (1,996 kg) load limit. The spindle nose can be set 5-35 in (127-889 mm) above the table.

02 What does quad box way Y axis support mean on the VMC 6032?

Fadal lists extremely rigid Y-axis quad ways as a standard feature and describes the structure as providing full way contact at full stroke. With 32 in (813 mm) of Y travel, the extra ways keep the saddle supported when the table is at either end of the stroke.

03 What is the difference between the VMC 6032 and the VMC 6032/50T?

The spindle and the tooling. The VMC 6032 has a CAT-40 spindle with 10,000 rpm and 220 ft-lb (298 Nm), a 24 tool changer and a 15 lb (6.8 kg) tool weight limit. The VMC 6032/50T has a CAT-50 geared spindle with 6,000 rpm and 425 ft-lb (576 Nm), 32 tools and a 35 lb (15.9 kg) limit. Travels and table are the same.

04 How many tools does the VMC 6032 hold and how large can they be?

24 tools in a dual arm changer with random selection and 1.5 sec tool to tool; 30 and 40 tool changers are options. A tool may weigh 15 lb (6.8 kg) and be up to 13.8 in (351 mm) long. Maximum diameter is 4.9 in (124 mm), or 3.1 in (79 mm) with adjacent tools.

05 How much floor space does the VMC 6032 take?

The machine measures 166 x 118 x 132 in (4,216 x 2,997 x 3,353 mm), length by width by height. With the optional chip conveyor the length becomes 220 in (5,588 mm). Machine weight is 32,400 lb (14,697 kg), so check floor loading and rigging access before delivery.
