Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Hartford HSA-427 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Hartford HSA-427 is a four-metre double-column machining center of the lighter HSA build. X travel is 4,000 mm (157.5 in), Y is 2,700 mm (106.3 in), and the table is 4,000 x 2,200 mm (157.5 x 86.6 in) with a 12,000 kg (26,455 lb) load.
Lighter is relative. In Hartford's scheme the x27 models run their tables on two X-axis linear guideways and the x28 models on three, and the load ratings follow: 12,000 kg here against 18,000 kg (39,683 lb) for the HSA-428. Where the work is aluminium plate, fabricated frames or moulds of moderate weight, the two-guideway machine does the same job with less moving mass.
Four metres also sits on a boundary in Hartford's ballscrew policy. X-axis ballscrew support is standard above 5 meters and optional below 4 meters, the maker says, so at this length the point should be raised when the machine is specified.
The spindle is #50: a gear head at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm, a DDS spindle at 10,000 / 12,000 rpm or a built-in spindle at 12,000 rpm. Motors range from 15 / 18.5 kW to an optional 30 /37 kW. Z travel is 780 mm, or 1,000 mm or 1,200 mm. The magazine holds 32, 40 or 60 tools.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 4,000 mm (157.5 in) of X travel with 2,700 mm (106.3 in) of Y
- 12,000 kg (26,455 lb) table load
- Choice of gear, DDS or built-in #50 spindle
- Slant cross-beam design to reduce vibration
- Z travel options up to 1,200 mm
Limitations
- Two X-axis guideways, not the three of the HSA-428
- Table load well below the HSA-428's 18,000 kg (39,683 lb)
- Ballscrew support on X has to be clarified at this length
- Top spindle speed of 12,000 rpm

Frequently Asked Questions
01
4,000 x 2,200 mm (157.5 x 86.6 in), with an average load of 12,000 kg (26,455 lb). X travel is 4,000 mm (157.5 in) and Y travel 2,700 mm (106.3 in).
02
780 mm as listed, with 1,000 mm and 1,200 mm as options. The Z axis has a nitrogen counterweight that Hartford says cuts oil temperature by 50%.
03
Hartford states that X axis ballscrew support is standard for models above 5 meters and optional below 4 meters, and that Y axis ballscrew support is an option for the x27 series. Ask how a 4,000 mm machine is configured.
04
The HSA-428 has a 4,000 x 2,500 mm (157.5 x 98.4 in) table, 2,800 mm (110.2 in) of Y travel, three X-axis guideways and an 18,000 kg (39,683 lb) load. The HSA-427 suits lighter work.
