Overview

The Hwacheon L3 is the largest of Hwacheon's L series: a single size with 3,000 mm (118.1 in) of X, 1,800 mm (70.9 in) of Y and 500 mm (19.7 in) of Z travel over a 3,000 x 1,800 mm (118.1 x 70.9 in) table rated 3,000 kg (6,614 lb). The columns stand 2,050 mm (80.7 in) apart. Unlike the L1 and L2 there is no choice of bed length.

Compared with the Hwacheon L2, the L3 matches the 3,000 mm length of the L2's 3,000 x 1,100 mm (118.1 x 43.3 in) version but takes the table to 1,800 mm (70.9 in) deep, and raises the rating from 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) to 3,000 kg. Thirteen T-slots, 22 mm wide at 140 mm pitch, run across the table. That suits large welded frames, plates and base castings that would not fit the narrower models, provided they stay within 500 mm (19.7 in) of Z and the 100 to 600 mm (3.9 to 23.6 in) gap between spindle nose and table.

The axes are tuned to the bigger mass. Rapids are 20 m/min (787 ipm) in X, 24 m/min (945 ipm) in Y and 36 m/min (1,417 ipm) in Z, so long positioning moves across a large plate take noticeably longer than on a small machine. Cutting feed reaches 20,000 mm/min (787 ipm).

The L3 shares its spindle options with the smaller L models: a 12K BT-40 spindle at 12,000 rpm and 18.5 / 11 kW (24.8 / 14.8 hp), or a 20K at 20,000 rpm and 37 / 18.5 kW (49.6 / 24.8 hp). With 40-taper tooling the machine is set up for milling, drilling and finishing on large flat work rather than heavy roughing of deep cavities. The magazine holds 30 tools, 40 optional, up to 350 mm (13.8 in) long and 8 kg (17.6 lb), and Ø150 mm (Ø5.9 in) with the adjacent pockets empty.

The footprint is 9,630 x 4,420 mm (379.1 x 174.0 in), the height 3,280 mm (129.1 in) and the weight 29,000 kg (63,933 lb). It runs on 45 kVA at 220V, 60Hz with air at 0.5 to 0.7 MPa x 690 Nℓ/min, and the control is a FANUC 0i-MF Plus.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 3,000 x 1,800 mm (118.1 x 70.9 in) table rated 3,000 kg (6,614 lb), the largest and strongest in the L series
  • 1,800 mm (70.9 in) of Y travel with 2,050 mm (80.7 in) between columns
  • Thirteen 22 mm T-slots at 140 mm pitch for clamping large plates
  • 20K BT-40 spindle option at 20,000 rpm with 37 / 18.5 kW (49.6 / 24.8 hp)
  • 30-tool magazine, 40 optional, for tools up to 350 mm (13.8 in) long

Limitations

  • Z travel is only 500 mm (19.7 in) on a table this large
  • X rapid of 20 m/min (787 ipm) and Y rapid of 24 m/min (945 ipm) lengthen long positioning moves
  • BT-40 tooling with an 8 kg (17.6 lb) tool weight limit restricts heavy face mills
  • 29,000 kg (63,933 lb) machine on a 9,630 x 4,420 mm (379.1 x 174.0 in) footprint, 3,280 mm (129.1 in) high

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the L3 differ from the Hwacheon L2?

The Hwacheon L2 has 1,100 mm (43.3 in) wide tables of 2,500 or 3,000 mm length rated 2,000 kg (4,409 lb). The L3 has one 3,000 x 1,800 mm (118.1 x 70.9 in) table rated 3,000 kg (6,614 lb), 1,800 mm (70.9 in) of Y travel and weighs 29,000 kg (63,933 lb).

02 How fast does the L3 traverse?

Rapids are 20 m/min (787 ipm) in X, 24 m/min (945 ipm) in Y and 36 m/min (1,417 ipm) in Z. Cutting feed runs up to 20,000 mm/min (787 ipm). The axis motors are 6 / 4 / 4 kW (8.0 / 5.4 / 5.4 hp) on X, Y and Z.

03 Which spindles can the L3 have?

Two BT-40 spindles: 12,000 rpm (12K) rated 18.5 / 11 kW (24.8 / 14.8 hp), or 20,000 rpm (20K) rated 37 / 18.5 kW (49.6 / 24.8 hp). Both have a Ø70 mm (Ø2.8 in) bearing bore and take MAS-403 BT-40 shanks.

04 Would the SIRIUS-1750 suit heavier parts than the L3?

The SIRIUS-1750 has a 3,200 x 1,750 mm (126.0 x 68.9 in) table rated 10,000 kg (22,046 lb), a BBT-50 spindle at 12,000 or 15,000 rpm rated 30 / 25 kW (40.2 / 33.5 hp) and weighs 31,000 kg (68,343 lb). The L3 is rated 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) with BT-40 tooling, so heavy castings and 50-taper roughing point to the SIRIUS-1750.

05 What does the L3 need on site?

A floor area of 9,630 x 4,420 mm (379.1 x 174.0 in), 3,280 mm (129.1 in) of height and a foundation for 29,000 kg (63,933 lb). Supply is 45 kVA at 220V, 60Hz, and air at 0.5 to 0.7 MPa x 690 Nℓ/min.
