Overview

The Johnford JET-32 is a small 40-taper vertical machining center built around fast positioning: 40 / 40 / 20 m/min (1,575 / 1,575 / 787 ipm) rapids over 820 mm (32.3 in) of X, 500 mm (19.7 in) of Y and 610 mm (24 in) of Z. Johnford files it under high-speed vertical machining centers, and the rapids are where that label is earned.

The spindle itself is ordinary in standard form. It runs 60~8,000 rpm on a 5.5 / 7.5 kW (7.4 / 10.1 hp) P motor, with a Hi-Lo gear version of the same rating as an option. So on a base JET-32 the time saved is between cuts, not in them. Parts with many short moves, hole patterns and frequent tool changes benefit. Long finishing passes with small cutters do not, unless the machine is ordered with one of the optional spindles: direct drive at 10,000 or 12,000 rpm, or a motor spindle at max. 15,000, 18,000 or 20,000 rpm.

The table is 1,000 x 500 mm (39.4 x 19.7 in) and carries 400 kg (880 lb). Spindle nose to table distance is 150~760 mm (5.9~29.9 in), so the nose never comes closer than 150 mm to the table surface; short tools on thin plate work need a riser or a vise to reach. A 24-tool armless changer is standard and arm type magazines with 24 or 32 tools are optional.

At 5,000 kg (11,000 lb) the JET-32 is the lightest machining center in this part of Johnford's range. It occupies 2,740 x 2,290 x 3,060 mm (107.9 x 90.2 x 120.5 in). The JET-40 is the longer version, with 1,050 mm (41.3 in) of X travel.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • X and Y rapids of 40 m/min (1,575 ipm) shorten non-cutting time on parts with many positioning moves
  • 24-tool armless ATC, full enclosure with interlocks and chip flushing coolant are standard accessories
  • 610 mm (24 in) of Z travel with up to 760 mm (29.9 in) between spindle nose and table
  • Lightest of its siblings at 5,000 kg (11,000 lb), which eases rigging and floor loading

Limitations

  • The standard spindle is limited to 8,000 rpm and 5.5 / 7.5 kW (7.4 / 10.1 hp), so the high-speed label applies to the axes rather than the spindle
  • Table load capacity is 400 kg (880 lb)
  • Minimum spindle nose to table distance is 150 mm (5.9 in), which short tools on low workpieces may not reach
  • Z rapid is 20 m/min (787 ipm), half the X and Y figure
06

Best For

Drilling and tapping patterns with many short positioning moves Small aluminium and steel parts within 820 x 500 mm of travel Light workpieces under the 400 kg (880 lb) table limit Shops that plan to add one of the optional 10,000 to 20,000 rpm spindles

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How fast are the rapids on the Johnford JET-32?

Johnford lists X-Y-Z rapid traverse as 40 / 40 / 20 m/min (1,575 / 1,575 / 787 ipm). The cutting feed range is 1~12,000 mm/min, and all three ball screws are Ø40.

02 Is the JET-32 spindle a high-speed spindle?

Not as standard. The table gives 60~8,000 rpm with a 5.5 / 7.5 kW (7.4 / 10.1 hp) P motor. The optional accessory list offers a direct drive spindle at 10,000 or 12,000 rpm and a motor spindle at max. 15,000, 18,000 or 20,000 rpm.

03 What tool changer does the JET-32 have?

An armless 24-tool changer is standard; arm type changers with 24 or 32 tools are options. Tools can be up to 100 mm (4 in) in diameter, or 75 mm (3 in) with adjacent pockets filled, 320 mm long and 10 kg (22 lb).

04 What is the difference between the JET-32 and the JET-40?

The JET-40 has 1,050 mm (41.3 in) of X travel and a 1,200 x 500 mm (47.2 x 19.7 in) table, against 820 mm (32.3 in) and 1,000 x 500 mm (39.4 x 19.7 in) here. The JET-40 weighs 6,000 kg (13,200 lb) instead of 5,000 kg (11,000 lb). Spindle, rapids and table load are shared.
