Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Fidia VHE 1687 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fidia VHE 1687 is the largest of Fidia's high-torque vertical machining centres, with 1,600 mm (63 in) of X, 815 mm (32 in) of Y and 700 mm (27.6 in) of Z. Its 1,700 x 815 mm (67 x 32 in) table carries up to 2,000 kg and the machine itself weighs 15,000 kg (33,069 lb).
Everything about it favours cut over pace. The axis feed rate is 10 m/min (394 ipm), well under the 24 m/min (945 ipm) of the VHE 1166, which says plainly that this size is meant to spend its time in the cut on large steel and cast iron blocks. The distance from spindle to column is 855 mm (33.6 in), so the tool reaches the centre of a wide die.
The standard spindle turns at 6,000 rpm on an ISO 50 or BT#50 taper with a 12 kW/18.5 kW motor and a ZF gear box 1:4, for 708 Nm of maximum torque. The changer has 24 positions and, on this size, accepts tools up to 125/400 mm, 15 kg, which helps with long drills and boring bars.
Ballscrews are 50-10/50-10/50-10 mm in direct coupling and the guides are box ways, 2 / 4 / 2 on X/Y/Z. Positioning is P 0.015 mm, improving to P 0.012 mm with optional optical scales. Allow for 30 kVA.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Largest VHE envelope: 1,600 mm (63 in) by 815 mm (32 in) by 700 mm (27.6 in)
- Table load of 2,000 kg on a 1,700 x 815 mm (67 x 32 in) table
- 15,000 kg (33,069 lb) of GGG40 cast iron structure
- Tools up to 125/400 mm, 15 kg in the 24-position changer
- 855 mm (33.6 in) from spindle to column
Limitations
- Axis feed rate is only 10 m/min (394 ipm)
- Z travel of 700 mm (27.6 in) is less than the 760 mm (29.92 in) of the VHE 1478
- A 6,000 rpm spindle makes this a roughing and semi-finishing machine unless a faster option is ordered
- Requires a 30 kVA power supply

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Travels are 1,600 mm (63 in) in X, 815 mm (32 in) in Y and 700 mm (27.6 in) in Z. The table is 1,700 x 815 mm (67 x 32 in), the maximum loading is 2,000 kg and the machine net weight is 15,000 kg (33,069 lb).
02
The brochure lists an axis feed rate of 10 m/min (394 ipm) for this size. It is a box-way machine built for the strongest roughing operations, in Fidia's words, so it is designed around cutting force and damping. The VHE 1166 is the fast model of the range at 24 m/min (945 ipm).
03
The swing arm tool changer has 24 positions and takes tools up to 125/400 mm, 15 kg (diameter/length, weight). Tool change is 5/10 sec tool to tool/chip to chip. The toolholder is ISO 50 or BT#50.
04
Yes, as options. The brochure lists an ISO50/BT#50 10000RPM spindle with ceramic bearings and no ZF gear box, and an ISO40/BT#40 12000RPM spindle, also without a gear box. There is also a 6000RPM option with a maximum torque of 956 Nm.
