Overview
The Haas VF-3YT takes the VF-3's 1016 mm (40 in) X-travel and stretches the Y-axis from the standard VF-3's 508 mm (20 in) to 660 mm (26 in), while also pushing Z-travel to 635 mm (25 in). The result is a mid-size VMC with a work envelope that covers a lot of ground for the price, making it one of the more versatile machines in the VF lineup.
The 1372 x 610 mm (54 x 24 in) table is a substantial work surface with 7 T-slots at 80 mm (3.15 in) spacing. Table load capacity is 1,588 kg (3,500 lb), which is a step up from the smaller VF models at 1,361 kg. That extra capacity matters when you're running heavy fixtures, rotary tables, or tombstone setups.
Spindle specs match the rest of the 40-taper VF line: 22.4 kW (30 hp) inline direct-drive at 8,100 RPM with 122 Nm (90 ft-lbf) at 2,000 RPM. The optional gearbox pushes torque to 339 Nm (250 ft-lbf) at 450 RPM. Rapids are 18.0 m/min (710 ipm) on all axes, which is slower than the 25.4 m/min on the smaller VF models. That's a function of the longer axis travels and heavier moving mass.
The standard 20-pocket carousel tool changer carries over, and SMTC upgrades to 30+1, 50+1, or 70+1 are available for shops that need more tools. At 5,697 kg (12,560 lb), the VF-3YT has noticeably more mass than the smaller VF-2 at 3,539 kg, which translates to better vibration damping during aggressive cuts.
Base price starts around $100,000. For shops that need more than 508 mm of Y-travel and are looking at the jump from VF-2-size machines to something bigger, the VF-3YT hits a sweet spot between the compact VF-2YT and the larger VF-5 series. Specs sourced from Haas Automation published data.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 1016 x 660 x 635 mm travel envelope covers a wide range of mid-size parts in a single setup
- 1,372 x 610 mm (54 x 24 in) table with 7 T-slots provides generous room for multi-vise and tombstone setups
- 5,697 kg (12,560 lb) machine weight delivers noticeably better vibration damping than smaller VF models
- 1,588 kg (3,500 lb) table load handles heavy rotary tables, fixtures, and tombstones
- Same 30 hp spindle and NGC control as the entire VF line — consistent operator experience across machines
- Base price around $100K is competitive for the work envelope size offered
Limitations
- 18.0 m/min (710 ipm) rapids are 29% slower than the 25.4 m/min on VF-1 and VF-2 models
- 8,100 RPM spindle limits high-speed aluminum work — consider the 50-taper VF-3YT/50 for heavier cuts
- Standard 20-pocket carousel tool changer feels small for a machine this size — SMTC upgrade recommended
- Larger footprint requires more floor space than VF-2-class machines
- 12.7 m/min (500 ipm) max cutting feedrate is 24% slower than VF-2's 16.5 m/min

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base price starts around $100,000. Common options bring the total to $115,000-$130,000. The SMTC upgrade is strongly recommended for a machine this size, adding about $8,000-$10,000 to the base price.
02
The VF-3YT extends Y-axis travel from 508 mm (20 in) to 660 mm (26 in) and Z from 508 mm to 635 mm (25 in). It also has a wider table at 610 mm (24 in) versus 406 mm (16 in). X-travel and spindle specs are identical. The YT is the better choice if you need more Y and Z reach.
03
The VF-3YT's longer axis travels and heavier moving components result in 710 ipm rapids versus 1,000 ipm on the VF-2. This is normal for larger machines and reflects the physics of accelerating and decelerating more mass over longer distances.
04
The VF-5/40 adds 254 mm (10 in) more X-travel at 1270 mm versus 1016 mm, with the same Y, Z, table size, and rapids. It weighs slightly more and costs about $20K extra. If you need the extra X-travel, it's worth the premium. If 40 inches of X is enough, the VF-3YT saves money.
05
Yes. The VF-3YT/50 offers a 50-taper spindle with 7,500 RPM, 460 Nm of torque, and a 2-speed gearbox. It's the better choice for heavy steel and cast iron work where tool clamping force and torque matter more than RPM.
