Overview
The Makino L2 Table is the fixed-table variant of Makino's L2 compact high-performance machining center, designed for high-volume small-part manufacturing where a larger work surface and standard fixturing approach are preferred over the L2 APC's pallet-change system. The L2 Table provides the same rigid construction and high-speed spindle technology in a configuration optimized for direct part loading, multi-part fixtures, and robotic part handling through the machine door.
Axis travel matches the L2 APC at 400 x 300 x 300 mm (15.7 x 11.8 x 11.8 in) on X/Y/Z. The 600 x 400 mm (23.6 x 15.7 in) fixed table provides significantly more work surface than the L2 APC's 120 mm diameter pallet, enabling multi-part fixtures and wider tombstone setups. However, the table load capacity is rated at 60 kg (132 lb), which is intentionally limited to maintain the high axis dynamics needed for short-cycle production. The A-axis provides 0.001-degree indexing resolution.
The standard 16,000 RPM HSK-A50 spindle (8,000 RPM optional) and the 48 m/min rapid/feed rates are identical to the APC variant. The L2 Table comes standard with a 30-tool ATC (versus the APC's 15 standard), providing more tool variety for complex multi-operation programs. The 3.5-4.5 second chip-to-chip time remains class-leading. Maximum workpiece size is 413 x 267 x 215 mm. The L2 Table competes against the Fanuc ROBODRILL alpha-DiB Plus, Brother Speedio S300X2, and Kitamura Mycenter-1XiF as a premium compact production VMC.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 600 x 400 mm fixed table provides five times the work surface area of the L2 APC's 120 mm pallet, enabling multi-part fixtures and wider setups
- Standard 30-tool ATC is double the L2 APC's standard 15, supporting more complex programs and higher part variety
- 3.5-4.5 second chip-to-chip time matches the L2 APC as class-leading for short-cycle production applications
- 48 m/min matched rapid/feed rates enable aggressive high-speed cutting strategies across all motion
- HSK-A50 taper provides rigidity advantages over BT30 competitors for better accuracy and tool life
- Fixed table design simplifies robotic integration through the machine door for automated part loading
Limitations
- 60 kg table load capacity is very restrictive—fixture weight alone can consume most of this capacity, limiting workpiece mass
- No pallet changer means spindle idles during part loading and setup, reducing utilization compared to the L2 APC
- 400 x 300 x 300 mm travel limits the machine to small components only
- Maximum workpiece size of 413 x 267 x 215 mm is smaller than the full table surface, reflecting chuck/fixture clearance constraints

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A new Makino L2 Table typically costs between $110,000 and $170,000. The fixed-table variant is approximately $15,000-$25,000 less than the L2 APC since it omits the pallet change mechanism. The base machine with 16K RPM spindle and 30-tool ATC starts around $110,000. Adding the 8K high-torque spindle, probing, and enhanced coolant pushes pricing toward $140,000-$170,000.
02
The 60 kg table load limit is intentional—the L2 Table is designed for high-speed, high-acceleration machining of small parts. Higher table loads would require heavier, slower axis systems that would compromise the 48 m/min feed rates and 3.5-4.5 second chip-to-chip times that make the machine productive. The 60 kg is sufficient for small-part fixtures and workpieces in the target application range.
03
Choose the L2 Table if you want a larger work surface for multi-part fixtures, need 30+ tools, or plan to use robotic part loading through the door. Choose the L2 APC if maximizing spindle utilization through pallet-change automation is the priority and your parts fit on the 120 mm pallet. The L2 Table costs less and offers more fixturing flexibility; the L2 APC delivers higher spindle utilization for manual-load scenarios.
04
Both machines target high-speed small-part production. The ROBODRILL offers similar or faster spindle speeds (up to 24,000 RPM) and lower pricing. The L2 Table counters with HSK-A50 tooling (versus BT30 on most ROBODRILLs), heavier construction for better rigidity in harder materials, and Makino's thermal management technology. The ROBODRILL has the largest installed base and most accessories/automation ecosystem. Choose the L2 Table for precision in harder materials; choose the ROBODRILL for light-alloy high-speed work.
