Overview
The Haas VF-12/50 puts a 50-taper geared spindle over a 150 in bed: 150 × 32 × 30 in (3,810 × 813 × 762 mm) of travel, 340 ft-lbf (460 N·m) of torque at 700 rpm and a 7,500 rpm top speed from a 30 hp (22.4 kW) motor. It is a vertical machining center for long work that has to be cut hard, not just reached.
Haas lists a starting price of US$433,995, the same figure it lists for the VF-14/40, so the two are natural alternatives. The VF-14/40 offers 40 in (1,016 mm) of Y with a 40-taper spindle rated 90 ft-lbf (122 N·m) at 2,000 rpm. The VF-12/50 stays at 32 in of Y and puts the difference into the spindle, its 2-speed gearbox and a tool changer for heavier tooling.
That changer holds 30+1 tools in CT or BT 50, each up to 30 lb (13.6 kg) and 16 in (406 mm) long. Diameter is limited to 4 in (102 mm) when every pocket is occupied and 10 in (254 mm) when the pockets either side are empty, which is what lets a large face mill or a boring head live in the magazine. The cost is time: 4.2 s tool to tool and 6.3 s chip to chip. Thrust is 3,400 lbf (15,124 N) on X, 4,100 lbf (18,238 N) on Y and 5,600 lbf (24,910 N) on Z. The spindle is liquid cooled, with air/oil injection to the bearings.
What the long table cannot do is carry unlimited weight. It measures 150 × 28 in (3,810 × 711 mm) and is rated for 4,000 lb (1,814 kg), a figure that heavy steel bar, rail or weldments reach quickly. Quote jobs against that number first, then against the travels. X moves at 360 ipm (9.1 m/min) in rapid, the same as the top cutting feedrate, while Y and Z rapid at 600 ipm (15.2 m/min). The machine ships at 37,200 lb (16,874 kg).

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 340 ft-lbf (460 N·m) at 700 rpm through a 2-speed gearbox, with a 7,500 rpm top speed
- 150 in (3,810 mm) of X travel on a table of the same length
- Changer carries tools to 30 lb (13.6 kg), and to 10 in (254 mm) in diameter with adjacent pockets empty
- Y thrust of 4,100 lbf (18,238 N) and Z thrust of 5,600 lbf (24,910 N)
- Liquid-cooled spindle with air/oil injection bearing lubrication
Limitations
- Y travel is 32 in (813 mm); Haas lists the VF-14/50 with 40 in (1,016 mm) on the same X and Z
- Table load of 4,000 lb (1,814 kg) is low for steel work that fills a 150 in (3,810 mm) table
- Tool changes take 4.2 s tool to tool and 6.3 s chip to chip
- Spindle power is 30 hp (22.4 kW), the same rating as the VF-12/40, so the gearbox adds torque at low speed, not power
- X rapid traverse is 360 ipm (9.1 m/min) over a 150 in (3,810 mm) axis

Frequently Asked Questions
01
They share travels, table and table load, so the spindle decides it. The VF-12/40 spindle reaches 8,100 rpm and makes 90 ft-lbf (122 N·m) at 2,000 rpm, while the VF-12/50 makes 340 ft-lbf (460 N·m) at 700 rpm and reaches 7,500 rpm. Both are rated 30 hp (22.4 kW). For large cutters at low speed in steel or iron the VF-12/50 is the stronger fit. For small tools and aluminium, the higher top speed of the VF-12/40 is the more useful figure.
02
340 ft-lbf (460 N·m) at 700 rpm, from a 30 hp (22.4 kW) motor driving a 2-speed gearbox. Maximum speed is 7,500 rpm. The taper is CT or BT 50, and the spindle is liquid cooled with air/oil injection bearing lubrication.
03
Up to 30 lb (13.6 kg) and 16 in (406 mm) long. With all 30+1 pockets in use the diameter limit is 4 in (102 mm). Leave the adjacent pockets empty and it rises to 10 in (254 mm). Budget 4.2 s tool to tool, or 6.3 s chip to chip, for each change.
04
It is 150 × 28 in (3,810 × 711 mm) with 5 T-slots, 0.626 in to 0.63 in (15.9 mm to 16 mm) wide, on 4.92 in (125 mm) centers. Maximum table load is 4,000 lb (1,814 kg). The spindle nose sits between 5 in (127 mm) and 35 in (889 mm) above the table surface.
05
Shipping weight is 37,200 lb (16,874 kg). The domestic pallet is 343 × 110 × 134 in (871 × 280 × 341 cm) and the export crate 343 × 110 × 137 in (871 × 280 × 348 cm). Supply either 220 VAC three-phase at 70 A or 440 VAC three-phase at 35 A. Air consumption is 4 scfm at 100 psi (113 L/min at 6.9 bar) through a 3/8 in inline hose and coupler, with a minimum of 80 psi (5.5 bar). The coolant tank holds 95 gal (360 L).
