Overview

On the Škoda Machine Tool WPA the workpiece never moves. This is the gantry version of the maker's portal milling machine: sliding columns carry the cross rail and headstock along X, over a clamping area built from clamping plates that can optionally include a rotary or carousel table. Gantry travel is listed as N x 2,000 mm (78.7 in), so length is added in modules.

That layout suits parts too long or too awkward to shuttle on a moving table, and one long floor can hold several setups at once. The maker extends the machine travel by 1 m so the gantry can pick up milling heads automatically at the end of the workplace. Width is set by a clearance between the columns of 4,000 - 10,000 mm (157.5 - 393.7 in), with 5,000 - 11,000 mm (196.9 - 433.1 in) of headstock travel in Y. Height comes from two figures: 3,000 - 7,000 mm (118.1 - 275.6 in) of clearance under the spindle, and a cross rail that adjusts 1,000 - 5,000 mm (39.4 - 196.9 in) as the W axis.

Which headstock rides on that rail is a question about cutters. For large diameter mills and boring, the HEAVY design puts 8,400 Nm (6,196 lb-ft) through two gear ranges, tops out at 3,000 rpm on 103 kW (138.1 hp), and uses a 600 x 600 mm (23.6 x 23.6 in) ram with 2,500 mm (98.4 in) of stroke. For smaller tools at higher speeds there is the SPEED design, a Direct Drive unit with a single range: 4,000 rpm, 110 kW (147.5 hp) and 3,000 Nm (2,213 lb-ft). Its ram is slimmer at 480 x 480 mm (18.9 x 18.9 in) and its Z travel shorter at 2,000 mm (78.7 in).

Every axis is fully hydrostatic, and telescopic covers protect the guideways. Facing and angular milling heads are standard, NC controlled heads are optional, and an automatic tool changer is part of the workstation. Coolant reaches the tool both externally and through it.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Gantry layout: the columns slide in X over a stationary clamping area, so part weight never rides on a moving axis
  • Clamping area made of clamping plates, optionally with a rotary or carousel table
  • Up to 11,000 mm (433.1 in) of headstock travel in Y and up to 5,000 mm (196.9 in) of cross-rail adjustment in W
  • Choice of a 4,000 rpm Direct Drive SPEED headstock or a two-range HEAVY headstock with 8,400 Nm (6,196 lb-ft)
  • Milling heads are picked up automatically at the end of the workplace

Limitations

  • The head pick-up station adds 1 m to the machine travel beyond the working length
  • HEAVY and SPEED are alternatives: the 8,400 Nm (6,196 lb-ft) headstock stops at 3,000 rpm, and the 4,000 rpm one offers 3,000 Nm (2,213 lb-ft)
  • A rotary or carousel table is optional, as are NC controlled milling heads and the robotic tool changer
  • The specification gives no load figure for the clamping plates
06

Best For

Very long workpieces machined in place on floor-level clamping plates Several setups along one gantry travel of N x 2,000 mm (78.7 in) Round parts set up on the optional rotary or carousel table Tall parts needing up to 7,000 mm (275.6 in) of clearance under the spindle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does gantry type mean on the WPA?

The columns move instead of the workpiece. Sliding columns with a vertically movable cross rail are joined by a fixed beam and travel in X by N x 2,000 mm (78.7 in). The part sits on clamping plates, and a rotary or carousel table can be added as an option. On the table-type WP it is the table that travels N x 2,000 mm (78.7 in).

02 Why is the WPA's travel longer than its clamping area?

The maker extends the machine travel by 1 m so that milling heads can be picked up automatically at the end of the workplace. Plan the foundation and the building length for that extra travel as well as for the clamping plates themselves.

03 Which headstock should a buyer choose for the WPA?

It depends on the tooling. HEAVY is described as a powerful torque design for large diameter mills or boring operations: 8,400 Nm (6,196 lb-ft), 103 kW (138.1 hp), 3,000 rpm, two gear ranges. SPEED uses Direct Drive for high working speeds: 4,000 rpm, 110 kW (147.5 hp), 3,000 Nm (2,213 lb-ft), one gear range.

04 How far does the ram of the WPA extend?

Z travel is 2,000 mm (78.7 in) with the SPEED headstock, whose ram measures 480 x 480 mm (18.9 x 18.9 in), and 2,500 mm (98.4 in) with the HEAVY headstock and its 600 x 600 mm (23.6 x 23.6 in) ram. The cross rail adds 1,000 - 5,000 mm (39.4 - 196.9 in) of vertical adjustment in W.

05 What guideways does the WPA use?

All axes are fully hydrostatic, and the guideways are covered by telescopic covers. The headstock with its extensible ram moves along the cross rail in the transverse direction, which is the Y axis of 5,000 - 11,000 mm (196.9 - 433.1 in).
