Overview

Box guideways are the reason the Accuway UM-120B exists. It shares its travels with the linear-guide UM-120, namely 1,200 mm (47.2 in), 650 mm (25.6 in) and 600 mm (23.6 in), but the guideway bearing type row says Box and the rapid traverse drops to 24 m/min (945 in/min) on every axis.

That trade is deliberate. Sliding box ways give more contact area and damping than rolling guides, which helps in interrupted cuts and with long tools in steel or cast iron, and they cost traverse speed. The options list supports the same intent: it offers a 2-step gear box, an entry that no linear-guide page in the BT40 line carries. A geared spindle multiplies torque at low speed for large drills and face mills.

As listed, the spindle is 10,000 rpm with 12,000 rpm in brackets and a Belt (Direct) drive, on 7.5/11 kW (10.1/14.8 hp) with 15/18.5 kW (20.1/24.8 hp) bracketed. Tools are BT40, up to 7 kg (15 lb), which sets its own limit on how heavy a cutter can be however stiff the ways are.

The table is 1,300 x 650 mm (51.2 x 25.6 in), longer than the X travel, with five 18 mm T-slots on a 120 mm pitch, and takes 1,200 kg (2,646 lb). Spindle nose to table is 150~750 mm (5.9~29.5 in). The machine weighs 7,500 kg (16,534 lb) and runs a FANUC 0i-M with AICC II.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Box guideways on a 1,200 x 650 x 600 mm travel BT40 machine
  • A 2-step gear box is offered on the optional accessories list
  • 1,300 x 650 mm (51.2 x 25.6 in) table, longer than the X travel, for clamping outside the cut
  • Spindle nose to table reaches 750 mm (29.5 in)

Limitations

  • Rapid traverse is 24 m/min (945 in/min), the slowest of the BT40 UM machines
  • Table load of 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) is below the 1,300 kg (2,866 lb) of the UM-120
  • The gear box is optional; the standard drive row reads Belt (Direct)
  • BT40 tooling limits tool weight to 7 kg (15 lb)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the B in UM-120B mean?

Accuway does not spell it out, but the table shows the difference: the guideway bearing type is Box, where the UM-120 lists Ball. Rapid traverse is 24 m/min (945 in/min) on X, Y and Z, against 30 m/min (1,181 in/min) on the UM-120.

02 Does the UM-120B have a geared spindle?

Not as standard. The drive system row reads Belt (Direct), and 2-step gear box is one of the optional accessories. Listed spindle speed is 10,000 rpm with 12,000 rpm in brackets, and motor power is 7.5/11 kW (10.1/14.8 hp) with 15/18.5 kW (20.1/24.8 hp) in brackets.

03 How large is the UM-120B table?

1,300 x 650 mm (51.2 x 25.6 in), with 5 T-slots 18 mm wide at a 120 mm pitch, and a maximum load of 1,200 kg (2,646 lb). X travel is 1,200 mm (47.2 in), so the table extends past the stroke.

04 What is the tool capacity of the UM-120B?

The magazine row reads 24, with 30/32 bracketed, and tool exchange is by arm. Maximum tool length is 300 mm (11.8 in), maximum diameter 75 mm (3.0 in), or 150 mm (5.9 in) without adjacent tools, and maximum weight 7 kg (15 lb).
