Overview

The Feeler VMX-580 is the smallest machine in the VMX range of vertical machining centers: 580 mm (22.8 in) of X travel, 420 mm (16.5 in) of Y and 510 mm (20.1 in) of Z under a 12,000 rpm spindle with a 7/24 No.40 taper. Feeler groups it with the VMX-760 as compact yet rigid machines for high-speed machining of small parts.

The table measures 650 x 420 mm (25.6 x 16.5 in) and is rated for 300 kg (661 lb). Y travel matches the table depth, so the spindle reaches the full surface front to back. That load figure is the thing to watch. A vise, a fourth-axis unit and the part all count against it, and the next load class in the series, the VMX-820 at 800 kg (1,764 lb), is a physically larger machine.

Speed is where the small frame pays. Rapid traverse is 48 m/min (1,890 ipm) on X and Y and 32 m/min (1,260 ipm) on Z, the highest X and Y figures in the VMX table, and the magazine holds 20 tools. On small parts with many short moves and frequent tool changes, positioning time is a large share of the cycle.

Feeler builds the series from Meehanite cast iron with an A-frame reinforced column base and servo motors driving the ball screws directly. The spindle is a direct-drive unit, described as a 12,000 rpm BBT40 spindle, and the maker says the machines can be equipped with linear or hardened rails. The series table lists no spindle power, torque or machine weight, so get those figures from Feeler before comparing it on cutting capacity.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 48 m/min (1,890 ipm) rapids on X and Y, the fastest in the VMX table
  • 12,000 rpm direct-drive spindle, which Feeler describes as a BBT40 unit
  • Y travel of 420 mm equals the depth of the 650 x 420 mm table, so the whole table is within reach
  • 510 mm (20.1 in) of Z travel on a machine with only 580 mm of X leaves headroom for a rotary unit or tall fixtures
  • Meehanite cast iron structure with an A-frame reinforced column base, per Feeler's series description

Limitations

  • Table load is 300 kg (661 lb), which a fourth axis and fixture can use up quickly
  • 20 tools in the magazine, against 24 on the VMX-820 and larger models
  • Z rapid is 32 m/min, a third slower than X and Y
  • Feeler's series table gives no spindle power or torque, so cutting capacity cannot be judged from the published figures

Best For

Small prismatic parts that fit a 650 x 420 mm table High-speed work with small tools at up to 12,000 rpm Cycles dominated by positioning moves and tool changes Shops with limited floor space for a 40-taper machine

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the Feeler VMX-580?

580 mm (22.8 in) in X, 420 mm (16.5 in) in Y and 510 mm (20.1 in) in Z. The table is 650 x 420 mm (25.6 x 16.5 in), so Y travel covers the full table depth and X travel is slightly shorter than the table is long.

02 How does the VMX-580 differ from the VMX-760?

Only in X and in table length. The VMX-760 has 760 mm of X travel and an 890 x 420 mm table. Y and Z travel, the 300 kg table load, the 12,000 rpm spindle, the 48 m/min X and Y rapids and the 20-tool magazine are the same in Feeler's table for both machines.

03 What spindle does the VMX-580 have?

The table lists 12,000 rpm with a 7/24 taper No.40. In its series description Feeler calls it a high-speed direct-drive spindle and names it a 12,000 rpm BBT40 spindle. Power and torque are not published on the series page.

04 Is there a pallet-changer version of the VMX-580?

Yes. The VMX-580APC has the same 580 x 420 x 510 mm travels with an automatic pallet changer. The VMX-580APC pallet is 580 x 410 mm and its load rating is 120 kg, against 300 kg on the fixed table here.

05 Does the VMX-580 use linear guides or box ways?

Feeler says each machine in the VMX series can be equipped with linear or hardened rails to suit the work. The series table does not say which is fitted to a given VMX-580, so confirm the guideway type when you ask for a quotation.
