Overview

The Hartford HSA-636 is a six-metre double-column machining center with the widest HSA gantry: 3,600 mm (141.7 in) of Y travel over a 6,000 x 3,000 mm (236.2 x 118.1 in) table. X travel is 6,000 mm (236.2 in) and the table load is 24,000 kg (52,910 lb).

Six metres by three is a table for assemblies as much as for single parts. Welded machine frames, large gearbox halves, transformer and generator components and marine engine parts all come as wide, irregular shapes that need a few accurate faces and bores. On such work the machine's value is in holding position over long distances, and Hartford's standard ballscrew support on both X and Y for this model addresses exactly that.

Hartford's structural description covers a slant cross-beam, extra-large columns with a 1,250mm joint width at the base, and three X-axis linear guideways that raise rigidity by more than 50% against torsion.

The spindle is #50: gear head at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm, DDS at 10,000 / 12,000 rpm or built-in at 12,000 rpm, with motors from 15 / 18.5 kW to 30 /37 kW. Z travel is 780 mm, or 1,000 mm or 1,200 mm. The magazine holds 32, 40 or 60 tools.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 6,000 x 3,000 mm (236.2 x 118.1 in) table with 3,600 mm (141.7 in) of Y travel
  • 24,000 kg (52,910 lb) table load
  • Ballscrew support on X and on Y as standard for this model, per Hartford's statements
  • Three X-axis guideways, with over 50% more torsional rigidity claimed
  • Three #50 spindle drives: gear, DDS and built-in

Limitations

  • Z travel of 780 mm, or 1,200 mm at most, on a very wide machine
  • No automatic head change is described for the HSA; that is the HSA-636EA's role
  • Spindle speed limited to 12,000 rpm
  • Machine footprint and weight are not published
