Overview

The Milltronics VM6030XP is a 50-taper vertical machining center with 60 x 30 x 24 in (1,524 x 762 x 610 mm) travels and a 66 x 30 in (1,676 x 762 mm) table. Its BIG-PLUS ISO No. 50 spindle is listed at 30/15 hp (22.4/11.2 kW) and 208.5 lb-ft (283 Nm), with a top speed of 8,000 rpm.

The taper is the dividing line. The VM5025IL below it is a 40-taper machine with 124 lb-ft (168 Nm) at 12,000 rpm; the VM6030XP gives up a third of that speed for about 68% more torque and a larger tool interface. CT50 holders can be up to 4.88 in (124 mm) in diameter, 11.8 in (300 mm) long and 33 lb (15 kg), against 3.15 in (80 mm) and 15.4 lb (7.0 kg) on the VM5025IL. That opens the door to large face mills, long boring bars and big drills in steel and iron.

Table load deserves attention. It is 4,190 lb (1,901 kg), the same as the VM5025IL despite the larger table, so a heavy die block or weldment has to be weighed together with its fixturing before it goes on.

Spindle nose to table distance is 4-28 in (102-711 mm) and T-slots are 0.71 in (18 mm). The 30-tool double-arm changer uses MAS 60 retention knobs. Rapids are listed as 1,000/787 ipm (25.4/20.0 m/min).

This is a 22,267 lb (10,100 kg) machine, 128 in (3,251 mm) high, on a nominal operating footprint of 149.7 x 149.4 in (3,802 x 3,795 mm); Milltronics gives 184.4 in with conveyor. Electrical supply is 37 kVA / 45 A at 480 V, 3-phase. For longer work the VM8434XP has the same spindle figures over an 86 x 34 in (2,184 x 864 mm) table.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • BIG-PLUS ISO No. 50 spindle with 208.5 lb-ft (283 Nm), about 68% more than the 124 lb-ft (168 Nm) VM5025IL
  • CT50 tools up to 4.88 in (124 mm) in diameter and 33 lb (15 kg)
  • 60 x 30 in (1,524 x 762 mm) of X and Y travel over a 66 x 30 in (1,676 x 762 mm) table
  • 30-tool double-arm changer with 11.8 in (300 mm) tool length
  • 22,267 lb (10,100 kg) of machine weight behind the cut

Limitations

  • Spindle speed tops out at 8,000 rpm, against 12,000 rpm on the VM5025IL
  • Table load is 4,190 lb (1,901 kg), no higher than the smaller VM5025IL
  • The lower of the two listed power figures is 15 hp (11.2 kW), below the 35/25 hp (26.1/18.6 kW) of the VM5025IL
  • Needs 37 kVA / 45 A at 480 V, 3-phase and 128 in (3,251 mm) of headroom
  • The control is not named in the table for this model
