Overview
The Haas VF-4SS takes the Super Speed platform and stretches X-travel to 1,270 mm (50 in), making it the longest-reach SS model in the medium VF lineup. Paired with 508 mm (20 in) of Y and 635 mm (25 in) of Z, the VF-4SS covers parts up to 50 inches long at 12,000 RPM spindle speed with 35.6 m/min (1,400 ipm) rapids. That combination of travel and speed is hard to find outside the Haas SS lineup without spending significantly more on a Makino or Okuma.
The spindle is the same 22.4 kW (30 hp) inline direct-drive unit wound for 12,000 RPM, delivering 122 Nm (90 ft-lbf) of torque at 2,000 RPM. It's liquid-cooled and accepts CT40, BT40, or HSK-A63 tooling. The 1,321 x 495 mm (52 x 19.5 in) table is slightly wider than the VF-3SS's 18-inch table, with 5 T-slots on 80 mm centers and 794 kg (1,750 lb) of load capacity.
The SMTC holds 30+1 tools with 1.8-second tool-to-tool and 2.4-second chip-to-chip times. Optional 50+1 and 70+1 configurations are available for tool-intensive work. Max cutting feedrate is 21.2 m/min (833 ipm), and rapid traverse hits 35.6 m/min (1,400 ipm) on all three axes. Axis thrust is 13,723 N (3,085 lbf) on X and Y, and 17,459 N (3,925 lbf) on Z.
At 6,124 kg (11,720 lb shipping weight), the VF-4SS weighs slightly more than the VF-3SS despite similar shipping dimensions. Starting at around $115,000, the VF-4SS costs about $27K more than the VF-3SS for the extra 10 inches of X-travel. That premium is worth it if your parts regularly exceed 40 inches, but shops that can work within 40 inches of X should save the money and go with the VF-3SS.
The VF-4SS slots between the VF-3SS and VF-5SS in the lineup. The VF-5SS adds 6 inches of Y-travel for shops that need wider parts but trades some rapid speed. All three SS models share the same spindle and control platform. Specs sourced from Haas Automation published data.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 50 inches of X-travel at 12,000 RPM and 1,400 ipm rapids makes it the longest-reach mid-size SS model in the Haas lineup
- 1.8-second tool-to-tool and 2.4-second chip-to-chip times cut non-cutting time significantly versus standard VF models
- 30 hp spindle with 122 Nm of torque handles steel when needed despite the high-speed aluminum optimization
- 52 x 19.5-inch table is slightly wider than the VF-3SS for better fixture options
- Optional 50+1 and 70+1 SMTC configurations support complex multi-tool jobs
- Same NGC control and HFO service ecosystem as every other Haas machine
Limitations
- 794 kg (1,750 lb) table load limits heavy fixture and workpiece combinations
- No gearbox option for heavy torque applications; optimized for high-speed cutting, not heavy roughing
- At $115K, the $27K premium over the VF-3SS buys only 10 additional inches of X-travel
- 80mm T-slot spacing differs from standard 125mm spacing on non-SS VF models
- 13-inch max tool length is shorter than standard VF models at 16 inches

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The VF-4SS adds 10 inches of X-travel (50 vs 40 in) and a slightly wider table (19.5 vs 18 in). Everything else is identical: same spindle, same rapids, same tool changer. The VF-4SS costs about $27K more. If your parts fit within 40 inches of X, the VF-3SS is the better value.
02
The VF-5SS adds 6 inches of Y-travel (26 vs 20 in) and uses a wider 24-inch table with 7 T-slots. However, the VF-5SS rapids are slightly slower at 1,200 ipm vs 1,400 ipm. If your parts are long and narrow, the VF-4SS is faster. If your parts are wider, the VF-5SS gives you the Y clearance.
03
Yes. The 30 hp spindle and 122 Nm of torque at 2,000 RPM can cut 304 and 316 stainless effectively. But the lighter machine weight and higher-speed spindle design mean you won't match the rigidity of a standard VF-4 for aggressive stainless roughing. Reduce depths of cut and use proper tooling.
04
On aluminum parts, expect 20-40% cycle time reduction depending on the mix of cutting time vs. rapid time vs. tool change time. The biggest gains come from the faster rapids (1,400 vs 1,000 ipm) and tool changes (2.4 vs 4.5 sec chip-to-chip). On steel parts, the improvement is modest since cutting speeds are limited by the material.
