Overview
A long table of small parts is the natural job for the Haas VF-4SS. It pairs 50 in (1,270 mm) of X travel with a 12,000 rpm spindle and 1,400 ipm (35.6 m/min) rapids, so the time spent moving from one vise to the next and changing tools is kept short. Y travel is 20 in (508 mm), Z is 25 in (635 mm), and the spindle is 40-taper.
The numbers behind that: the side-mount changer holds 30+1 tools and swaps them in 1.8 s tool-to-tool, 2.4 s chip-to-chip. Cutting feed goes up to 833 ipm (21.2 m/min). The VF-4, on the same 52 × 19.5 in (1,321 × 495 mm) table, has an 8,100 rpm spindle, 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min) rapids and a 20-tool carousel.
Speed is paid for in load. The table is rated 1,750 lb (794 kg), half the VF-4's 3,500 lb (1,588 kg). The spindle makes 30 hp (22.4 kW) and 90 ft-lbf (122 N·m) at 2,000 rpm with no gearbox row in the table, and thrust is 3,085 lbf (13,723 N) on X and Y and 3,925 lbf (17,459 N) on Z. Haas's shipping table lists this model in several builds and gives no weight for the bare machine. With the conveyor it is 13,800 lb (6,260 kg); with the 50+1 side-mount tool changer, 12,181 lb (5,525 kg); with the 70+1 changer, 13,840 lb (6,278 kg). There is also a pallet-size row for a 120+1 changer with conveyor. The starting price is US$107,995. If the work needs more Y, the VF-5SS has 26 in (660 mm) on a 54 × 24 in (1,372 × 610 mm) table, with rapids of 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min).
