Overview

The Sugino CNCPRO PRO-407 / PRO-607 is the standard-stroke version of Sugino's #25 turret drilling and tapping center, a machine only 750 mm wide. The first model number is the 4-spindle turret head and the second the 6-spindle head; everything else in the maker's table is shared. Travels are 240 mm (9.4 in) in X and 200 mm (7.9 in) in Y and Z over a 350 × 250 mm table.

Sugino says it kept only the functions needed for drilling and tapping, and the figures bear that out. The spindle motor is rated 0.75 kW for 10 min. and 0.4 kW continuous. Stated capacity is a 12 mm drill and an M10 tap in aluminum, 10 mm and M8 in cast iron, and 8 mm in steel with M6 in carbon steel. The chuck takes φ0.5 to φ13 mm, and tools are limited to 1.2 kg and 160 mm in length.

Tool changes are the strong point. The turret head indexes in 0.4 sec by cam, and Sugino gives a tool-to-tool timing of 0.4 seconds and a chip-to-chip timing of 0.9 seconds, which it attributes to a taper clutch joint between the turret head and the spindle. Standard spindle speed is 100 to 8,000 rpm, with a high speed version to 12,000 rpm. Rapids are 30 m/min (1,181 ipm).

Accuracy is in keeping with the purpose: 0.010 mm positioning in full travel and ±0.005 mm repeatability. The machine weighs 1,000 kg (2,205 lb), draws 3 kVA at AC 200V and, according to Sugino, needs no hydraulic power. The table carries 150 kg (331 lb). Where the part is longer than the X travel allows, the CNCPRO PRO-407L / PRO-607L has 560 mm (22.0 in) of X on a 600 × 250 mm table.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Turret index time of 0.4 sec; Sugino gives 0.9 seconds chip-to-chip
  • Footprint of 750 mm by 1,635 mm, and a weight of 1,000 kg (2,205 lb)
  • Runs on a 3 kVA supply and needs no hydraulic power, as stated by the maker
  • Choice of a 4-spindle or 6-spindle turret head on the same machine
  • High speed spindle version reaches 12,000 rpm against 8,000 rpm as standard
  • Removable operating panel can sit on top of the machine or close at hand

Limitations

  • Spindle motor is 0.75 kW for 10 min. and 0.4 kW continuous, so milling is not what it is for
  • At most 6 tools, and only 4 on the 4-spindle type
  • Steel capacity is given as an 8 mm drill, and carbon steel tapping as M6
  • X travel is 240 mm (9.4 in); the long stroke version is needed for longer parts
  • Repeatability is ±0.005 mm and positioning 0.010 mm in full travel

Best For

Drilling and tapping small aluminum and cast iron parts Deburring operations, which Sugino names as an ideal use Rows of narrow machines where floor width is the limit Cycles that need no more than 4 or 6 tools

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the PRO-407 and the PRO-607?

The number of spindles on the turret head. The PRO-407 is the 4-spindle type and the PRO-607 the 6-spindle type. Sugino prints them in one column for every other row: the same travels, table, spindle speeds, accuracy, dimensions and weight.

02 What are the travels and table size of the CNCPRO PRO-407 / PRO-607?

X is 240 mm (9.4 in), Y is 200 mm (7.9 in) and Z is 200 mm (7.9 in). The table working area is 350 × 250 mm (13.8 × 9.8 in), and the distance from table surface to spindle nose is 230 to 430 mm. The allowable load shown for this model is 150 kg (331 lb).

03 How fast does the CNCPRO change tools?

The turret head indexes in 0.4 sec with an all cam index and random, shortest approach selection. Sugino states a tool-to-tool timing of 0.4 seconds and a chip-to-chip timing of 0.9 seconds, using a taper clutch joint between the turret head and the spindle.

04 What size holes can the CNCPRO PRO-407 / PRO-607 drill and tap?

Sugino gives drilling capacity as 12 mm diameter in aluminum, 10 mm in cast iron and 8 mm in steel. Tapping capacity is M10 in aluminum, M8 in cast iron and M6 in carbon steel. The chuck capacity is φ0.5 to φ13 mm.

05 What power does the CNCPRO need?

The power supply row reads 3 kVA at AC 200V. Sugino states that no hydraulic power is required to drive the machine. The machine itself measures 750 × 1,635 × 2,100 mm (29.5 × 64.4 × 82.7 in) and weighs 1,000 kg (2,205 lb).
