How much does the Colchester CB-1000 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Colchester CB-1000 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Colchester CB-1000 is the smallest of three CNC bed mills, with travels of 1,070 mm (42.1 in) in X, 510 mm (20.1 in) in Y and 510 mm (20.1 in) in Z. On a bed mill the table moves only in X and Y on a fixed bed while the head carries the vertical axis, so the table can take heavy work without a knee to support. A 140 mm (5.5 in) quill gives a second, manual-style vertical movement for drilling.
The spindle is an ISO 40 taper driven by a 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) inverter motor, with a top speed of 3,600 rpm. Colchester fits heavy duty back gears in the headstock instead of a timing belt for the high and low ranges. That arrangement favours torque at low speed, which is what a 40-taper face mill or a large drill needs, and it explains the modest top speed.
Construction is traditional and heavy. The column, saddle, base and table are stress-relieved Meehanite cast iron. The X slideway is a dovetail and the Y and Z slideways are box ways, coated with Turcite-B, and the slideways, table and T-slots are hardened and ground. The axis drives use 1:2 ratio timing belt pulleys to raise drive torque.
Control is the Fanuc 0i-MF Plus with Manual Guide i, or a Siemens 828D with ShopMill. One caution on size: the specification table and the descriptive text on Colchester's page give different table dimensions for this model, so the table size is left out here until the maker confirms it. There is no tool changer in the specification.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- ISO 40 spindle with heavy duty back gears for low-speed torque
- Travels of 1,070 mm (42.1 in) in X and 510 mm (20.1 in) in both Y and Z
- Box ways on Y and Z with Turcite-B coated slideways
- Stress-relieved Meehanite cast iron column, saddle, base and table
- Fanuc 0i-MF Plus with Manual Guide i, or Siemens 828D with ShopMill
Limitations
- 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) is low power for a 40-taper machine
- Top speed of 3,600 rpm limits small cutters and aluminium work
- No automatic tool changer is listed
- The maker's page gives two different table sizes for this model

Frequently Asked Questions
01
X-axis travel is 1,070 mm (42.1 in), Y-axis travel 510 mm (20.1 in) and Z-axis travel 510 mm (20.1 in). Quill travel is 140 mm (5.5 in). The X and Y axes run on precise ballscrews.
02
An ISO 40 taper spindle with a 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) inverter motor and a spindle speed of 3,600 rpm. Colchester describes the spindle as SCM415 steel, fully hardened and precision-ground, and the headstock as using heavy duty back gears for the high and low speeds.
03
Colchester's specification table prints one table size for the CB-1000 and the text on the same page states another. Because the two disagree, neither figure is repeated here. Ask Colchester to confirm the table dimensions and the load it can carry before ordering.
04
The CB-1300 is larger in every axis: 1,300 mm (51.2 in) in X, 600 mm (23.6 in) in Y and 700 mm (27.6 in) in Z, on an 1,800 x 450 mm (70.9 x 17.7 in) table. Spindle taper, power, speed and quill travel are the same on both.
