Overview
The Republic Lagun VBMA-850 is the smallest of four VBMA vertical bed mills and the only one listed at 5,000 rpm. It is a 3 axis CNC bed mill with an NST# 40 spindle, a 5 HP (3.7 kW) motor and travels of 32 in (813 mm) in X and 18 in (457 mm) in both Y and Z.
A bed mill keeps the table at a fixed height and moves the head, and this one still thinks like a toolroom machine. The spindle has a quill with 5 in (127 mm) of travel. There are hand wheels on X and Y and a hand lever on Z, with a manual pulse generator listed as an option, so a simple facing or drilling job can be done without writing a program. For programmed work Lagun Engineering states that Fanuc 0i-MF controls are standard, carried on a pendant.
The table is 12 x 50 in (305 x 1,270 mm) and rated for 1,102 lb (500 kg). Its long, narrow shape favours bar-shaped parts, plates and a row of vises over deep fixtures, and it is longer than the 32 in (813 mm) X travel, so not all of it can be reached by the spindle. The maker lists positioning accuracy of 0.0004 in/ft and repeatability of 0.0002 in/ft.
Construction is conventional and heavy: stress-relieved Meehanite castings, hardened and ground box ways lined with Turcite, ball screws on all three axes with AC brushless servo motors, and a counterweight for the head. Hi-Low back gears are provided for heavy cutting. The feature list says the machine is arranged for 3/60/480 volt operation, which is worth checking against the shop supply before delivery.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 5,000 rpm spindle, against 3,600 rpm on the VBMA-1000
- Hand wheels on X and Y and a Z hand lever for manual work, with an MPG optional
- Fanuc 0i-MF control stated as standard
- Hi-Low back gears for heavy cutting on a 5 HP (3.7 kW) NST# 40 spindle
- Hardened and ground box ways with Turcite lining
Limitations
- Table is only 12 in (305 mm) wide
- No tool changer appears in the maker's table or feature list
- Arranged for 3/60/480 volt operation, which not every small shop has
- 5 HP (3.7 kW) is the only motor listed

Frequently Asked Questions
01
X travel is 32 in (813 mm), Y travel 18 in (457 mm) and Z travel 18 in (457 mm). The quill adds 5 in (127 mm) of travel. The table measures 12 x 50 in (305 x 1,270 mm) and carries up to 1,102 lb (500 kg).
02
Yes, to a degree. The maker lists hand wheels on the X and Y axes and a hand lever on Z, and says all axes can also be moved by a manual pulse generator, which is optional. The quill has 5 in (127 mm) of travel.
03
Lagun Engineering describes the VBMA-850 as featuring standard Fanuc 0i-MF controls. The feature list adds a contouring control system on a pendant and AC brushless axes servo motors and drives.
04
The VBMA-1000 has more X travel, 39 in (991 mm) against 32 in (813 mm), and a 50 x 15 in (1,270 x 381 mm) table, but a slower 3,600 rpm spindle and 17 in (432 mm) of Y and Z travel. The VBMA-850 runs to 5,000 rpm and has 18 in (457 mm) in Y and Z.
