Overview

Of Sharp's CNC knee mills, the TMV-1-MP-3 is the most heavily equipped: three servo axes, an NT-40 spindle and a 5 hp (3.72 kW) motor. It is also the heaviest of the group at 3750 lb (1701 kg).

Think of it as the upper limit of what a knee mill does under CNC. The MILLPWR G2 control moves the table 31 in (787 mm) and 15.5 in (393 mm) and feeds the Z axis through 5 in (127 mm), so a complete part program, with roughing passes stepped down in depth, runs without the operator touching a handle. The 40-taper spindle lets those passes use a face mill or an indexable end mill of useful size.

Its limits are those of the frame. A knee, a ram and a tilting head give a wide range of positions (the ram moves 18.5 in (470 mm), the knee 15.3 in (388.62 mm) and the head tilts 90° sideways and 45° fore and aft), but every one of those joints is a place where a heavy cut can deflect the machine. Five horsepower on this frame is for steady cuts with sharp tools, not for hogging.

Sharp lists an NT-30 spindle in lieu of the NT-40 as an option. Spindle speed is 60 - 4500 rpm, and the machine occupies 7.08 x 6.66 x 7.5 ft (2.15 x 2.02 x 2.28 m).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What makes the TMV-1-MP-3 different from the TMV-MP-3?

Spindle and motor. The TMV-1-MP-3 has an NT-40 taper and 5 hp (3.72 kW); the TMV-MP-3 is listed at 3 hp (2.25 kW). The TMV-1-MP-3 is also heavier, 3750 lb (1701 kg) against 3500 lb (1587 kg) for the TMV-MP-3. Travels and control are the same.

02 What are the head movements on the TMV-1-MP-3?

Head tilt is 90° left and right and 45° up and down. The ram travels 18.5 in (470 mm), placing the spindle center 9.8 - 28.3 in (250 - 720 mm) from the column, and the spindle nose sits 1.6 - 16.9 in (40.64 - 429.26 mm) above the table.

03 What programming does the TMV-1-MP-3 support?

The Acu-Rite MILLPWR G2 control has G code and conversational type programming, according to Sharp. A 3 axes digital readout system on the table, saddle and quill is standard, as are an auto lube system and a cross way cover.

04 How much floor space does the TMV-1-MP-3 need?

The floor area is listed as 7.08 x 6.66 x 7.5 ft (2.15 x 2.02 x 2.28 m), width by depth by height, and weight as 3750 lb (1701 kg). The table travels 31 in (787 mm), so allow room at both ends for the table overhang.
