Overview

Sitting in the middle of the three MAX machines, the AWEA AF-1600MAX pairs 1,600 mm (63.0 in) of X travel with 800 mm (31.5 in) of Y and 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z. Its 1,700 x 800 mm (66.9 x 31.5 in) table is rated for 1,500 kg (3,307 lb), and the machine weighs 16,000 kg (35,273 lb).

AWEA sells two machines with this X stroke, and they are not close relatives. The AF-1600II is an 8,600 kg (18,959 lb) machine with 740 mm (29.1 in) of Y, 610 mm (24.0 in) of Z and a 30-tool magazine. The AF-1600MAX almost doubles the mass, opens Z by a wide margin and lists a BT50 option that the AF-1600II's table row does not show. If the work is plate, the II is enough. If it is a block, this is the one.

Within the MAX group the differences come down to length. The AF-1400MAX is the shorter neighbour with a 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) table, the AF-1800MAX the longer one with 1,800 kg (3,968 lb); Y, Z, spindle, feed rates and tooling stay the same across all three. Rapids are 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) in X and Y and 24 m/min (945 ipm) in Z, with cutting feed to 12 m/min (472 ipm).

The base spindle is direct-drive at 12,000 rpm with 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp). The 24-tool magazine rides on the column and accepts tools up to 250 mm (9.8 in) long. AWEA states 40 kVA for power and fits a 630 liter coolant tank. The control is the FANUC Oi - MF PLUS.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,600 x 800 x 800 mm work envelope with a 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) table rating
  • 16,000 kg (35,273 lb) structure with the saddle on four linear guideways
  • BT50 spindle option, which the AF-1600II's table row does not list
  • Up to 960 mm between spindle nose and table for tall setups
  • 630 liter coolant tank, with chip augers fitted as standard

Limitations

  • 24-tool magazine, six fewer pockets than the AF-1600II
  • X and Y rapids of 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) and a 12 m/min (472 ipm) cutting feed limit
  • Standard spindle motor is 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp), small against the machine's mass unless a gear spindle is ordered
  • Needs 40 kVA and lifting capacity for 16,000 kg (35,273 lb)

Best For

Large mold and die blocks up to 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) Box-shaped parts using the full 800 mm (31.5 in) of Y and Z Steel work with the optional BT50 spindle Long parts with tall features that the AF-1600II cannot clear

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What separates the AF-1600MAX from the AF-1600II?

Both travel 1,600 mm (63.0 in) in X. The AF-1600MAX has 800 mm (31.5 in) of Y and Z, weighs 16,000 kg (35,273 lb), carries 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) and lists a BT50 option. The AF-1600II has 740 mm (29.1 in) of Y, 610 mm (24.0 in) of Z, weighs 8,600 kg (18,959 lb), carries 1,450 kg (3,197 lb) and has a 30-tool magazine.

02 How heavy a workpiece can the AWEA AF-1600MAX take?

The table load capacity is 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) on a 1,700 x 800 mm (66.9 x 31.5 in) table with five 18 mm T-slots at a 150 mm pitch. The AF-1400MAX is rated for 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) and the AF-1800MAX for 1,800 kg (3,968 lb).

03 What is the vertical clearance on the AF-1600MAX?

Z travel is 800 mm (31.5 in) and the spindle nose to table distance is 160 ~ 960 mm (6.3 ~ 37.8 in). A footnote on AWEA's specification page gives a different range for BT50, so ask for the exact figures when ordering the 50-taper spindle. Maximum tool length is 250 mm (9.8 in).

04 Which control does the AF-1600MAX run?

AWEA lists the FANUC Oi - MF PLUS. The three axes are driven by FANUC αi absolute AC servo motors coupled directly to dual-nut ball screws, according to the maker's description of the series. Positioning accuracy is 0.008 mm and repeatability 0.006 mm (ISO230-2).
