Overview

The Johnford VMC-1600S is the wide-table version of the VMC-1600. The S models in the Large VMC series have 1,100 mm (43.3 in) of Y travel and a 1,000 mm deep table, and this one pairs that with 1,600 mm (63 in) of X on a table of 1,800 x 1,000 mm (70.9 x 39.4 in).

A C-frame vertical with 1,100 mm of Y is uncommon, because the spindle has to overhang the column by the full depth of the work. Here the spindle center sits 1,150 mm (45.3 in) from the column. Johnford answers the longer saddle travel with a Φ63 ball screw on Y, where X and Z keep Φ50, and the machine weighs 18,600 kg (40,920 lb). For wider work than this Johnford's double column machines take over; the DMC-1600, for example, has 1,300 mm (51.2 in) of Y travel.

For the user the benefit is a single setup on wide plates and mold bases that would otherwise need turning around. The table takes 4,600 kg (10,120 lb). Z travel is 800 mm (31.5 in) with 150~950 mm (5.9~37.4 in) under the spindle nose.

The spindle is the series' 40-taper unit: BT-40 / CAT-40, 80-8,000 rpm with an automatic Hi-Lo gearbox and a 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) motor. With that much overhang and that motor, the VMC-1600S is better suited to finishing and moderate cuts across a wide part than to heavy roughing at the front edge of the table. The machine is 4,580 mm (180.3 in) wide front to back and 3,695 mm (145.5 in) high.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the S stand for on the Johnford VMC-1600S?

Johnford does not spell it out, but in the table the S models share a 1,000 mm deep table, 1,100 mm (43.3 in) of Y travel and 1,150 mm (45.3 in) from spindle center to column. The VMC-1600 without the S has 850 mm (33.5 in) of Y.

02 How large is the VMC-1600S table?

1,800 x 1,000 mm (70.9 x 39.4 in), with a load capacity of 4,600 kg (10,120 lb). Travels are 1,600 x 1,100 x 800 mm (63 x 43.3 x 31.5 in).

03 What ball screws does the VMC-1600S use?

The table lists X-Y-Z ball screw diameters of Φ50, Φ63 and Φ50. The larger Y screw is specific to the S models; the VMC-1600 has Φ50 on all three axes.

04 Is a No.50 spindle available on this frame?

Yes. The VMC-1600SHD has a BT-50 / CAT-50 spindle at 10-4,500 rpm with a 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) motor on the same table and travels.
