Overview

The Johnford VMC-3000SHD is the top of the Large VMC series in both length and spindle: 3,050 mm (120 in) of X travel with a BT-50 / CAT-50 head rated 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp). Y travel is 1,100 mm (43.3 in), Z is 800 mm (31.5 in), and the table measures 3,200 x 1,000 mm (126 x 39.4 in).

Long parts are often the ones that need a 50-taper spindle most. A machine bed, a long die rail or a fabricated beam usually has wide faces to mill flat and large bores or slots to cut, and those are jobs for a 250 mm (9.8 in) face mill and stiff boring tools. The geared spindle here turns 10-4,500 rpm, and its 100 mm (3.9 in) spindle diameter compares with 70 mm (2.8 in) on the 40-taper VMC-3000S.

There are limits to respect. The table is rated 4,800 kg (10,560 lb) across its 3.2 m length, so a long solid steel part can exceed the rating before it fills the table. Axis rapids are 12 / 12 / 12 m/min (472 / 472 / 472 ipm) with cutting feed to 8,000 mm/min. Weight is 23,000 kg (50,600 lb).

Installation needs planning: the machine is 7,700 mm (303 in) long, 4,580 mm (180.3 in) deep and 3,695 mm (145.5 in) high. Standard equipment includes a full enclosure with interlocks, four screw type chip conveyors with trolley and a Fanuc 0i-MF PLUS control with a 10.4 in LCD. A scraper type chip conveyor with magnetic separator is optional and suits the cast iron chips this spindle will produce.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 50-taper geared spindle, 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp), over 3,050 mm (120 in) of X travel
  • 100 mm (3.9 in) spindle diameter and tools up to 250 mm (9.8 in) across
  • 3,200 x 1,000 mm (126 x 39.4 in) table with 1,100 mm (43.3 in) of Y
  • Full enclosure with interlocks is standard even at this length

Limitations

  • 4,800 kg (10,560 lb) table load over a 3.2 m table
  • 12 m/min (472 ipm) rapids and an 8,000 mm/min (315 ipm) cutting feed limit
  • Spindle speed ends at 4,500 rpm, too slow for small end mills
  • 7,700 x 4,580 mm (303 x 180.3 in) footprint and 23,000 kg (50,600 lb) weight need a prepared foundation
06

Best For

Machine beds, rails and long die components to 3,050 mm (120 in) Face milling and boring long cast iron or steel parts with 50-taper tools Long fabrications within the 4,800 kg (10,560 lb) table rating

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the key figures for the Johnford VMC-3000SHD?

Travels of 3,050 x 1,100 x 800 mm (120 x 43.3 x 31.5 in), a 3,200 x 1,000 mm (126 x 39.4 in) table, a BT-50 / CAT-50 spindle at 10-4,500 rpm with 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp), and a machine weight of 23,000 kg (50,600 lb).

02 How heavy a workpiece can the VMC-3000SHD take?

The table load capacity is 4,800 kg (10,560 lb). That is the same rating as the VMC-2000SHD, which has a 2,200 x 1,000 mm (86.6 x 39.4 in) table, so the extra length does not add capacity.

03 What chip handling comes with the VMC-3000SHD?

Four screw type chip conveyors with a trolley are standard. A chain type chip conveyor with trolley and a scraper type chip conveyor with magnetic separator are on the option list, along with a paper filtration system.

04 How does the VMC-3000SHD differ from the VMC-3000S?

Only at the spindle and tool changer. The VMC-3000S is BT-40 / CAT-40 at 80-8,000 rpm with 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) and a 24-tool armless changer. The SHD is BT-50 / CAT-50 at 10-4,500 rpm with a 20-tool armless changer and 15 kg (33 lb) tools.
