Overview

The Haas DC-3-40 Drill Center extends the 40-taper drill center platform to a larger work envelope, stepping up from the DC-2-40 with 1,016 x 660 x 394 mm (40 x 26 x 15.5 in) of travel. That 40-inch X-travel and 26-inch Y-travel put larger plates, manifolds, and production fixtures well within reach while keeping the rear chip discharge and high-speed DNA that define the DC series.

The spindle is the same 11.2 kW (15 hp) inline direct-drive unit running at 10,000 RPM with 62 Nm (46 ft-lbf) of torque through a CT/BT 40 taper. Optional 12,000 and 15,000 RPM spindle upgrades are available. The 40-taper provides solid tool rigidity for larger drills, reamers, and light face milling. High-speed rigid tapping runs at 5,000 RPM with 4x retract.

The table measures 1,270 x 457 mm (50 x 18 in) and supports up to 454 kg (1,000 lb), a meaningful step up from the DC-2-40's 500 lb capacity. The 18+1 SMTC delivers 1.75-second tool-to-tool and 2.0-second chip-to-chip times. Rapids hit 61.0 m/min (2,400 ipm) on all axes, maintaining the same production speed as the smaller DC models.

Rear chip discharge is standard, keeping the work zone clear for high-volume production. The larger envelope compared to the DC-2-40 accommodates structural panels, large manifold blocks, and multi-part fixtures that need 40 inches of X-travel. Positioning accuracy is plus or minus 0.010 mm (0.0004 in) with plus or minus 0.005 mm (0.0002 in) repeatability.

At approximately $85,000-$110,000 configured, the DC-3-40 fills the gap between the DC-2-40 and dedicated VF-series machines for shops that need a large-envelope drill center with automatic chip evacuation. If your work is primarily drill-and-tap on larger parts, the DC-3-40's rear chip discharge and high rapids give it a throughput edge over a standard VMC.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,016 mm (40 in) X-travel handles large plates and multi-part fixtures that exceed the DC-2-40's 28-inch envelope
  • 40-taper spindle with 2,400 IPM rapids combines tool rigidity with high-speed drilling performance across a wide travel range
  • Rear chip discharge provides automatic chip evacuation critical for high-volume production lines
  • 1,000 lb table load doubles the DC-2-40 capacity for heavier fixtures and larger workpieces
  • 1.75-second tool-to-tool changes maintain production speed on multi-tool drill patterns across the wider table
  • Same NGC control and 40-taper tooling as DM and VF-series for shop floor standardization

Limitations

  • 15 hp spindle limits heavier milling operations; for versatile mill work on this envelope, consider a VF-3 or VF-4
  • Dedicated drill center format is less versatile than a standard VMC for mixed milling work
  • Larger footprint than DC-1-40 and DC-2-40 without a proportional increase in cutting capability
  • 18+1 tool capacity may be limiting for complex multi-operation parts that need more tool positions

Best For

High-volume drill-and-tap operations on large plates, structural panels, and manifolds up to 40 inches Automotive and industrial production requiring precision hole patterns across wide workpieces Production lines where 40-taper rigidity and automatic rear chip evacuation are both required Shops running dedicated drilling stations on larger parts alongside VF-series milling machines Aerospace bracket and panel production requiring precision hole patterns on parts up to 1,016 mm

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas DC-3-40 cost?

Base price starts around $85,000. With through-spindle coolant, probing, and spindle upgrade, configured price runs $95,000-$110,000.

02 What is the difference between the DC-3-40 and the DC-2-40?

The DC-3-40 extends X-travel from 711 mm to 1,016 mm (28 to 40 in) and Y-travel from 406 mm to 660 mm (16 to 26 in). Table load increases from 500 lb to 1,000 lb. Same spindle, same speed. Choose the DC-3-40 for larger parts that need more travel and table capacity.

03 Should I get a DC-3-40 or a VF-3?

The VF-3 offers comparable travel with more milling capability and a larger spindle. The DC-3-40 adds rear chip discharge for automatic chip evacuation in dedicated drilling production. Choose the DC-3-40 for high-volume drill/tap lines; choose the VF-3 for mixed milling and drilling.

04 Can the DC-3-40 handle light milling?

Yes. The 40-taper spindle supports face milling, shallow pocketing, and contouring in aluminum and softer materials. For significant milling volume, a VF-3 or VF-4 is the better choice since they are optimized for heavier cutting.
