Overview

The Haas VF-7/40 is a large-format 40-taper vertical machining center built for shops that need serious X-axis reach without stepping up to a 50-taper platform. With 2,134 mm (84 in) of X-travel, 813 mm (32 in) of Y, and 762 mm (30 in) of Z, this machine covers a work envelope that handles long parts, multi-part fixtures, and tombstone setups that smaller VF-series machines simply can't reach.

The spindle is the same 22.4 kW (30 hp) inline direct-drive unit found across the large VF 40-taper lineup, turning at 8,100 RPM with 122 Nm (90 ft-lbf) of torque at 2,000 RPM. An optional gearbox bumps torque to 339 Nm (250 ft-lbf) at 450 RPM for heavy face milling in steel and cast iron. The spindle is liquid-cooled and accepts CT40, BT40, or HSK-A63 tooling from the factory.

Haas equips the VF-7/40 with an upgraded standard features package that includes a side-mount tool changer (SMTC) with 30+1 capacity, chip auger, programmable coolant nozzle, and remote jog handle. The SMTC posts 2.8-second tool-to-tool and 3.6-second chip-to-chip times, which is noticeably faster than the carousel changers on the smaller VF models. The 2,134 x 711 mm (84 x 28 in) T-slot table handles up to 1,814 kg (4,000 lb) of evenly distributed load across 5 T-slots.

Rapid traverse runs at 15.2 m/min (600 ipm) on all three axes, with a max cutting feedrate of 12.7 m/min (500 ipm). Axis thrust is substantial at 15,124 N (3,400 lbf) on X and Y, and 24,910 N (5,600 lbf) on Z. At 11,612 kg (25,600 lb), the VF-7/40 has the mass to back up aggressive cuts in steel without walking across the floor.

The machine runs on the Haas Next Generation Control with all the standard connectivity features: widescreen monitor, Ethernet, WiFi, and the large touchscreen remote jog handle. Starting at around $165,000, the VF-7/40 competes against machines like the Okuma GENOS M660-V and Mazak VTC-300C, but at a significantly lower entry price. Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 2,134 mm (84 in) of X-travel in a 40-taper platform avoids the cost and complexity of stepping up to a 50-taper machine
  • SMTC with 2.8-second tool-to-tool changes is significantly faster than carousel changers on smaller VF models
  • Upgraded standard features package includes chip auger, programmable coolant nozzle, and touchscreen remote jog handle at no extra cost
  • 1,814 kg (4,000 lb) table load handles heavy fixtures, tombstones, and multi-part setups without concern
  • Same 30 hp inline direct-drive spindle and NGC control used across the entire VF lineup means familiar operation and shared spare parts
  • 11,612 kg (25,600 lb) machine weight provides solid rigidity for heavy cuts in steel and cast iron

Limitations

  • 8,100 RPM max spindle speed is limiting for high-speed aluminum work; no SS variant available in this frame size
  • 15.2 m/min (600 ipm) rapids are adequate but slower than high-speed machines from Makino or Okuma in this travel range
  • 32 in of Y-travel may feel tight for shops that need full 40-inch Y-axis reach; the VF-9/40 adds 8 more inches of Y for about $25K more
  • Large footprint requires significant floor space and rigging considerations at 25,600 lb shipping weight
05

Best For

Shops machining long aerospace structural parts, extrusions, or rails up to 84 inches Multi-part fixture setups where X-axis reach eliminates the need for part repositioning Job shops stepping up from a VF-3 or VF-4 that need more travel without leaving the Haas ecosystem Mold and die work on large mold bases that fit within the 84 x 28-inch table Manufacturers running tombstone setups with 4th-axis indexers for medium-volume production

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the VF-7/40 and the standard VF-7?

The VF-7/40 is the 40-taper version of the large VF-7 frame. There is no 50-taper VF-7. All large-frame VF models with the /40 designation use the same 30 hp, 8,100 RPM, CT40/BT40/HSK-A63 spindle. The /40 suffix distinguishes it from older model naming conventions.

02 How does the VF-7/40 compare to the VF-9/40?

Both share the same 84-inch X-travel and identical spindle. The VF-9/40 adds 8 inches of Y-travel (40 vs 32 in) and uses a wider 84 x 36-inch table with 7 T-slots instead of 5. The VF-9/40 costs about $25,000 more. If your parts and fixtures fit within 32 inches of Y, the VF-7/40 saves money without sacrificing X-axis reach.

03 What electrical service does the VF-7/40 need?

Standard configuration requires 220 VAC three-phase at 70 amps. An optional internal high-voltage transformer allows 440 VAC operation at 35 amps. The transformer must be ordered with the machine and is not field installable.

04 Can the VF-7/40 be equipped with a 4th axis?

Yes. Haas offers several rotary table options that mount to the T-slot table. The 84-inch X-travel makes it well-suited for 4th-axis work, as you can position the rotary table anywhere along the full travel range. Provision for automatic pallet changers is also available as a factory option.

05 What comes standard on the VF-7/40 that is optional on smaller VF models?

All large-frame VF/40 models include the side-mount tool changer (SMTC), chip auger, programmable coolant nozzle, and large touchscreen remote jog handle as standard equipment. On smaller VF models, many of these are paid options.
