Overview

The Fehlmann PICOMAX 56L TOP is the long-table version of Fehlmann's combined manual and CNC milling machine: 800 mm (31.5 in) of X travel on a 1,400 x 480 mm (55.1 x 18.9 in) clamping surface, with Y and Z unchanged at 400 mm (15.7 in) each.

The PICOMAX 56 TOP has 500 mm of X and a 908 x 480 mm table. What the L buys is length in one clamping: a long rail, shaft or plate machined in a single step without repositioning, or several fixtures set up side by side. The table is also a good deal longer than the X travel, which leaves parking space for a dividing unit at one end and a tailstock at the other.

That 4-axis setup is where the L version earns its footprint. With the optional CNC dividing unit, Fehlmann points to the increased distance between dividing unit and tailstock, so longer workpieces can be held between the two and machined on several faces. Operation follows the TOP concept (Touch Or Program): handwheels and a drilling lever for simple manual work, a Heidenhain TNC 620 with multi-touch and graphically supported cycles for CNC programs.

The spindle is a cooled motor spindle, 50 - 12,000 rpm and 9.5 kW (12.7 hp) at S6 (40% ED), with a quoted torque of 60 Nm. The automatic tool changer for 20 or 30 tools is optional. The machine needs 2.5 / 1.9 / 2.5 m (W/D/H) and weighs 3,750 kg (8,267 lb) without the changer and 4,000 kg (8,818 lb) with the 20-pocket one.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 800 mm (31.5 in) of X travel for long workpieces in a single clamping
  • 1,400 x 480 mm (55.1 x 18.9 in) clamping surface takes several fixtures side by side
  • More room between the optional CNC dividing unit and a tailstock for 4-axis work on long parts
  • Manual operation with handwheels and drilling lever, or full CNC with the Heidenhain TNC 620
  • Cooled motor spindle with 50 - 12,000 rpm, 9.5 kW (12.7 hp) and 60 Nm

Limitations

  • Y travel stays at 400 mm (15.7 in), so the added capacity is in length only
  • Takes 2.5 m of width against 1.7 m for the PICOMAX 56 TOP
  • Automatic tool changer and CNC dividing unit are options
  • Weighs 3,750 kg (8,267 lb) without tool changer and 4,000 kg (8,818 lb) with it

Best For

Long single parts such as rails, shafts and plates within 800 mm of X travel 4-axis machining of extra-long workpieces with dividing unit and tailstock Several fixtures mounted at once on the 1,400 x 480 mm table One-off and small-batch work without time-consuming programming

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the L in PICOMAX 56L TOP stand for?

It marks the long version. Compared to the standard model, the L version has extended X travel of 800 mm and a clamping surface of 1,400 x 480 mm. The PICOMAX 56 TOP has 500 mm of X travel and a 908 x 480 mm surface. Y and Z travel are 400 mm on both.

02 Can the PICOMAX 56L TOP do 4-axis machining?

With an option, yes. A FEHLMANN CNC dividing unit can be added for 4-axis operation, and the large table surface makes it suitable to work with a tailstock. Fehlmann notes that the L version gives more distance between dividing unit and tailstock, so longer workpieces can be machined this way.

03 Is the PICOMAX 56L TOP a machining center or a manual machine?

Fehlmann presents it as both: it can be used as a full CNC machining center under the Heidenhain TNC 620 or as a conventional manual machine with handwheels and a drilling lever. An automatic tool changer for 20 or 30 tools is optional, so the degree of automation depends on how it is ordered.

04 How much larger and heavier is the L version?

The PICOMAX 56L TOP needs 2.5 / 1.9 / 2.5 m of space and weighs 3,750 kg without tool changer or 4,000 kg with the 20-pocket changer. The PICOMAX 56 TOP is listed at 1.7 / 1.9 / 2.5 m and 3,050 kg or 3,250 kg. Depth and height do not change; the extra room goes sideways.

05 What spindle does the PICOMAX 56L TOP have?

The cooled Fehlmann motor spindle with 50 - 12,000 rpm and 9.5 kW (12.7 hp) at S6 (40% ED). The maker quotes 60 Nm of torque and milling and drilling in steel up to Ø 40 mm. The distance between table and spindle nose is 120 - 520 mm over a Z travel of 400 mm.
