Overview

The Hartford HSA-216 is a small double-column machining center on linear guideways, offered with a #40 or a #50 spindle. X travel is 2,250 mm (88.6 in) and the table measures 2,000 x 1,400 mm (78.7 x 55.1 in) with an 8,000 kg (17,637 lb) load.

Its Y travel row shows how the machine can be built. It reads 1,600 (std) / 1,500 (OPT. Z axis is box guideway) mm: the standard machine has 1,600 mm of Y, and when the Z axis is ordered as a box guideway the Y stroke becomes 1,500 mm. Z travel is 780 mm (30.7 in).

The spindle list is the broadest of the HSA line. In #40 the DDS spindle comes at 10,000 / 15,000 / 20,000 rpm with a 7.5 / 11 kW motor, or 15 / 18.5 kW as the option. In #50 there is a DDS spindle at 10,000 / 12,000 rpm and a gear head at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm, with 15 / 18.5 kW and options of 18.5 / 22 kW and 22 / 26 kW. So the same frame can be a high-speed mould finisher or a 50-taper roughing machine.

Hartford casts column and cross-beam as one piece for this size and says the extra-large columns add 15% rigidity. The three linear axes are driven by direct-coupled servo motors. Tool magazines are an arm type with 32 tools, or 40, with 60 also listed for #50, and an S type entered as S: 20.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • #40 DDS spindle up to 20,000 rpm or #50 gear head at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm on one frame
  • 8,000 kg (17,637 lb) table load on a 2,000 x 1,400 mm (78.7 x 55.1 in) table
  • One-piece column and cross-beam casting
  • Optional box-guideway Z axis
  • HSK-A63 among the #40 shank alternatives

Limitations

  • Z travel is 780 mm (30.7 in) with no longer option listed
  • Y travel drops from 1,600 mm to 1,500 mm with the box-guideway Z axis
  • Taper, motor and magazine are linked, so the build has to be fixed at order
  • No rapid traverse figures on the product page

01 What are the travels of the Hartford HSA-216?

X is 2,250 mm (88.6 in) and Z is 780 mm (30.7 in). Y is 1,600 mm as standard, or 1,500 mm when the Z axis is ordered with a box guideway. The table is 2,000 x 1,400 mm (78.7 x 55.1 in).

02 Is the HSA-216 a 40-taper or 50-taper machine?

Either. The spindle nose row reads #40, #50. Shanks are BT-40, with CAT40, DIN, BBT40 and HSK-A63 as alternatives, or BT-50, with CAT50, DIN and BBT50.

03 What spindle speeds does the HSA-216 offer?

In #40, a DDS spindle at 10,000 / 15,000 / 20,000 rpm. In #50, a DDS spindle at 10,000 / 12,000 rpm or a gear head at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm.

04 How does the HSA-216 differ from the HSA-2212?

The HSA-2212 is the narrow version: a 2,000 x 1,100 mm (78.7 x 43.3 in) table, 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of Y travel and a 3,500 kg (7,716 lb) load. The HSA-216 is wider, carries 8,000 kg (17,637 lb) and lists more spindle choices.
