Overview
The Hyundai WIA KF5/50 is the BT50 (CAT50) heavy-duty variant of the KF5 platform, designed for shops that need higher spindle rigidity and torque for productive machining of steel, cast iron, stainless steel, and titanium. While the standard KF5 uses a BT40 taper, the KF5/50 steps up to BT50 for significantly more cutting force capability, making it suitable for aggressive roughing operations that would push a 40-taper machine beyond its limits.
Axis travels of 800 x 510 x 510 mm (31.5 x 20.1 x 20.1 in) define the work envelope on a 1,000 x 510 mm (39.4 x 20.1 in) T-slot table rated for 1,000 kg (2,205 lb). The BT50 spindle provides 10,000 RPM with 22/18.5 kW (30/25 hp) and significantly higher torque than the 40-taper variants — approximately 200+ Nm at the low end of the speed range. Rapid traverse of 36 m/min (1,417 ipm) is appropriate for the heavier construction.
The heavier column and spindle assembly contribute to excellent vibration damping during heavy cuts. Linear roller guideways on all axes provide smooth, accurate motion even under the higher cutting forces this machine is designed to handle. The 30-tool servo-driven arm-type ATC accommodates the larger BT50 toolholders. The FANUC 0i-MF Plus control is standard.
At $130,000-$180,000 new, the KF5/50 fills the gap between compact 40-taper VMCs and large-format 50-taper machines. It competes with the Haas VF-3 (50-taper), Doosan DNM 5700/50, and Okuma GENOS M660-V in the mid-size, heavy-duty VMC segment. For shops that machine primarily ferrous materials and need more rigidity than a 40-taper can provide, the KF5/50 is a cost-effective solution.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- BT50 taper provides significantly higher spindle rigidity and torque than 40-taper machines for productive steel and cast iron roughing
- 1,000 kg table load capacity handles heavy workpieces and robust fixturing without compromising accuracy
- 22 kW spindle power with BT50 torque multiplication enables aggressive material removal rates in ferrous materials
- Compact platform delivers 50-taper capability without the floor space requirements of full-size 50-taper VMCs
- FANUC 0i-MF Plus control provides industry-standard programming and CAM compatibility
- Linear roller guideways maintain positioning accuracy under the higher cutting forces typical of 50-taper operations
Limitations
- 10,000 RPM maximum speed limits high-speed aluminum productivity compared to 15,000-20,000 RPM 40-taper machines
- 36 m/min rapids are slower than the 48 m/min 40-taper KF5 variants due to heavier moving mass
- BT50 tooling costs more and weighs more than BT40, increasing both tooling investment and operator handling effort
- 800 mm X-travel is compact for a 50-taper machine — shops with larger parts may need a bigger platform
Best For
Frequently Asked Questions
01
Choose the KF5/50 when your work is primarily steel, cast iron, stainless, or titanium and you need the higher torque and rigidity of a BT50 spindle for aggressive roughing. If 50%+ of your work is aluminum or you need spindle speeds above 10,000 RPM, the standard KF5 (BT40 or HSK-A63) is the better choice.
02
A BT50 spindle typically delivers 50-80% more torque at the same power rating compared to BT40, due to the larger taper ability to transmit more cutting force without tool pullout or deflection. This translates to deeper cuts, higher feed rates, and the ability to use larger-diameter face mills and endmills productively.
03
Both are mid-size 50-taper VMCs at similar price points. The KF5/50 offers faster rapids (36 vs 25.4 m/min), linear roller guideways, and FANUC control. The Haas VF-3 provides a larger dealer network, the Haas NGC control, and slightly more X-travel. Choose based on control preference and local service availability.
04
Yes. The BT50 taper provides the rigidity needed for productive titanium machining with appropriate tooling and cutting strategies. Use through-spindle coolant (optional), rigid toolholders, and conservative cutting parameters. For dedicated titanium production, the higher-power KF5700B II or F960B platforms with their heavier construction may be more appropriate.
