Overview

AWEA sells four bridge mills with a 2,000 x 1,200 mm work area, and the VP-2012 is the plain gear-spindle one among them. Its X travel is 2,000 mm (78.7 in), Y is 1,200 mm (47.2 in), Z is 760 mm (29.9 in), and the 2,000 x 1,100 mm (78.7 x 43.3 in) table is rated for 3,500 kg (7,716 lb).

Sorting out the four is the first job for a buyer. The VP-2012HS swaps the gear head for a direct-driven spindle at 10,000 rpm with 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp). The VP-2012HSS goes further toward finishing, with a BT 40 spindle listed at 10 ~ 15,000 rpm. The HD-2012 stays with a gear spindle at 6,000 rpm but raises the table load to 4,500 kg (9,921 lb) and the machine weight to 18,500 kg (40,785 lb). Against those, the VP-2012 has the smallest motor, 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp), on a 16,000 kg (35,273 lb) machine.

So this is the model for 50-taper milling, drilling and boring at moderate metal removal, where neither a fast spindle nor a heavier table is needed. BT50 is standard and BBT50 optional. The magazine holds 32 tools, with 24 or 40 as options.

Axis speeds don't yet suffer from length here. X and Y rapid at 24 m/min (945 ipm) and Z at 20 m/min (787 ipm). Positioning accuracy is 0.012 mm on every axis.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of X with the full 24 m/min (945 ipm) X rapid; the VP-3012 is down to 20 m/min (787 ipm)
  • Gear spindle at 6,000 rpm on a BT50 taper for large face mills and boring bars
  • 32-tool magazine as standard, with 24 and 40 tools listed as alternatives
  • Runs from a 40 kVA supply, against 50 kVA for the HD-2012
  • 0.012 mm positioning accuracy on X, Y and Z

Limitations

  • 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor, half the continuous rating of the 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) HD-2012
  • 3,500 kg (7,716 lb) table load, below the 4,500 kg (9,921 lb) of the HD-2012
  • Y stops at 1,200 mm (47.2 in); the VP-2016 gives 1,600 mm (63.0 in) on the same X
  • No speed above 6,000 rpm in this column of the table; the 10,000 rpm head belongs to the VP-2012HS

Frequently Asked Questions

01 VP-2012, VP-2012HS, VP-2012HSS or HD-2012: how do they differ?

All four share 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of X and 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of Y. The VP-2012 has a gear spindle at 6,000 rpm and 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp). The VP-2012HS has a direct-driven spindle at 10,000 rpm. The VP-2012HSS has a BT 40 spindle listed at 10 ~ 15,000 rpm. The HD-2012 keeps 6,000 rpm with 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) and a 4,500 kg (9,921 lb) table.

02 What is the table load of the VP-2012?

3,500 kg (7,716 lb) on a 2,000 x 1,100 mm (78.7 x 43.3 in) table. AWEA describes the working table as rib reinforced to restrain vibration. For heavier pieces on the same footprint, the HD-2012 is rated for 4,500 kg (9,921 lb).

03 Can the VP-2012 be ordered with a different spindle?

The VP-2012 column of AWEA's table lists only the gear spindle at 6,000 rpm, with BT50 standard and BBT50 optional. The maker's spindle page for the series shows three heads: the 6,000 rpm gear spindle and direct drive units at 10,000 rpm and 15,000 rpm. The faster heads appear in the tables of the HS and HSS models.

04 How large can the tools be?

Up to Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in) with neighbouring pockets filled, or Ø229 mm (Ø9.0 in) with them empty. Length is limited to 350 mm (13.8 in) and weight to 15 kg (33 lb). Long boring bars need checking against that length before the job is quoted.

05 Should I take the VP-2012 or the VP-2016?

It depends on part width. The VP-2016 has 1,600 mm (63.0 in) of Y, a 2,000 x 1,500 mm (78.7 x 59.1 in) table and 1,800 mm (70.9 in) between columns, with a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) motor and 20,000 kg (44,092 lb) of machine weight. If the work stays within a 1,100 mm wide table, the VP-2012 covers it on a lighter machine.
