Overview

Ten feet of X travel on a vertical machining center: the Haas VF-10/40 moves 120 in (3,048 mm) in X, 32 in (813 mm) in Y and 30 in (762 mm) in Z over a 120 × 28 in (3,048 × 711 mm) table. The spindle is a 40-taper inline direct-drive unit, 8,100 rpm and 30 hp (22.4 kW).

The long axis behaves differently from the other two, and the table says so directly. X rapids at 360 ipm (9.1 m/min) while Y and Z rapid at 600 ipm (15.2 m/min), which makes X about 40% slower. The maximum cutting feedrate is also 360 ipm. For a single long part, a spar, a rail, a truck frame member, a sign panel, that is rarely a constraint, because the tool is cutting for most of the trip. For a row of small parts with tool changes between stations, the slow X axis becomes part of every cycle and is worth timing before buying.

Load is the other figure to read carefully. The table is rated for 4,000 lb (1,814 kg), the limit Haas also gives for the VF-12/40 with its 150 × 28 in (3,810 × 711 mm) table. Stretched over 120 in, that favours aluminium and light sections over solid steel bar. The spindle follows suit with 90 ft-lbf (122 N·m) at 2,000 rpm, or 250 ft-lbf (339 N·m) at 450 rpm if the optional gearbox is fitted.
