Overview

The Sharp KMA-1-CNC is a CNC bed mill, not a machining center: Sharp states that there is no Automatic Tool Change (ATC). It is the smallest of three vertical-spindle KMA sizes, with 51.2 in (1300 mm) of X travel, 22 in (558 mm) of Y and 21.6 in (548 mm) of Z on the spindle head.

Its character comes from the spindle. A No. 50 taper is driven through an 18-speed gearhead by a 10 hp (7.45 kW) motor, and the speed range is 45 rpm to 1,500 rpm. That is slow by the standards of any tool-changing mill, and it is the point. Large face mills, shell mills and big drills in steel want torque at low speed, and a geared head supplies it. Small cutters in aluminium do not belong here unless the optional 4,600 rpm variable speed head is ordered in place of the 1,500 rpm one.

The frame is a C design on four box ways that Sharp describes as hand scraped, hardened and ground, with a Turcite coating on the slideways. Pneumatic locks on the table and saddle hold the axes that are not feeding during a heavy cut.

The table is long and narrow, 74.8 x 19.7 in (1900 x 500 mm), and carries 3,500 lb (1587 kg). Because the table overhangs the travel, Sharp gives an X/Y cutting range of 51.2/20.8 in (1300/528 mm). The control is a Fanuc OiMF with a 3-axis electronic handwheel.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • No. 50 taper gearhead spindle with 18 speeds from 45 rpm to 1,500 rpm
  • 74.8 x 19.7 in (1900 x 500 mm) table with a 3,500 lb (1587 kg) load
  • Four hand scraped, hardened and ground box ways
  • Pneumatic locks on the table and saddle and a power drawbar as standard
  • Fanuc OiMF control with AC servo drives

Limitations

  • No automatic tool changer: every tool change is made by the operator
  • Top speed of 1,500 rpm unless the 4,600 rpm option is ordered
  • Feed and rapid traverse are both listed at 236 ipm at most
  • Y travel of 22 in (558 mm) is the shortest of the KMA line

Best For

Heavy face milling and drilling in steel plate and weldments Long parts on a 74.8 in table One-off and repair work with few tool changes Fixture plates and die shoes up to 3,500 lb

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Does the KMA-1-CNC have a tool changer?

No. Sharp's description says there is no Automatic Tool Change (ATC). Tools are changed by hand with the standard power drawbar, and the electro magnetic spindle brake stops the No. 50 taper spindle for the change.

02 What are the travels of the KMA-1-CNC?

Table travel is 51.2 in (1300 mm) in X and 22 in (558 mm) in Y, and the spindle head travels 21.6 in (548 mm) in Z. Sharp also lists an X/Y cutting range of 51.2/20.8 in (1300/528 mm) and a cutting height of 19.6 in (500 mm).

03 How fast does the KMA-1-CNC spindle run?

The gearhead has 18 speeds from 45 rpm to 1,500 rpm, driven by a 10 hp (7.45 kW) motor. Sharp lists a 4,600 rpm variable speed head in lieu of the 1,500 rpm head as an optional accessory.

04 How does the KMA-1-CNC compare with the KMA-2-CNC?

The KMA-2-CNC has the same 74.8 x 19.7 in (1900 x 500 mm) table and the same 10 hp (7.45 kW) spindle motor, with 59 in (1500 mm) of X, 26 in (660 mm) of Y and 23.6 in (600 mm) of Z travel. The KMA-2-CNC weighs 15,400 lb (6985 kg); the KMA-1-CNC weighs 11,440 lb (5189 kg).

05 What power and floor space does the KMA-1-CNC need?

Total power consumption is listed as 25 kVA. Floor space is 169.3 x 132 in (4300 x 3353 mm), machine height 117.3 in (2980 mm) and net weight 11,440 lb (5189 kg). The table top is 32.28 in (820 mm) from the floor.
