Overview

The AWEA BM-1400 MAX is where the BM line changes character. It is a box-way vertical machining center with 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of X travel, 800 mm (31.5 in) of Y and 700 mm (27.6 in) of Z, and it reverses the taper choice of the BM-II models: BT50 is standard, BT40 the option.

The spindle is the main event. AWEA lists a gear spindle with 6,000 rpm and an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor. The maker describes a High-Low two-step gear box built in house, with nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy gears and its own lubrication and cooling. A geared 50-taper head turns motor power into torque at low speed, which is what large face mills, deep drilling and roughing in die steel ask for. The tool magazine is sized to match: tools up to 15 kg (33 lb) and Ø105 mm, or Ø210 mm with adjacent pockets empty.

Mass follows. At 13,000 kg (28,660 lb) the machine is far heavier than the BM-1400II with its 8,100 kg (17,857 lb), and the table rating rises to 1,800 kg (3,968 lb) on a 1,500 x 800 mm (59.1 x 31.5 in) surface. Rapids are deliberate, 20 m/min (787 ipm) in X and Y and 18 m/min (709 ipm) in Z.

Two figures set this model apart from the larger MAX machines. Z travel is 700 mm (27.6 in) where the BM-1600 MAX has 800 mm (31.5 in), and AWEA's table gives the coolant tank as 770 liter, more than the 570 liter of the BM-1600 MAX. The second figure looks out of sequence, so confirm it with the maker if coolant volume matters.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Gear spindle, 6,000 rpm, with a two-step gear box and an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor
  • BT50 as the standard taper, BT40 optional
  • 1,800 kg (3,968 lb) table load and 800 mm (31.5 in) of Y travel
  • Magazine accepts 15 kg (33 lb) tools up to Ø105 mm with full pockets
  • 13,000 kg (28,660 lb) box-way structure

Limitations

  • Rapids of 20 m/min (787 ipm) in X and Y and 18 m/min (709 ipm) in Z
  • Z travel of 700 mm (27.6 in) is the shortest of the BM MAX models
  • 6,000 rpm ceiling limits finishing with small cutters
  • Power requirement rises to 35 kVA from the 25 kVA of the BM-1400II

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What spindle does the AWEA BM-1400 MAX have?

A gear spindle with a maximum of 6,000 rpm and an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor. BT50 is standard and BT40 is the option. AWEA describes the gear box as a High-Low two-step design made in house, with an auto lubrication and cooling system for the gear mechanism.

02 How does the BM-1400 MAX differ from the BM-1400II?

The BM-1400 MAX has 800 mm (31.5 in) of Y and 700 mm (27.6 in) of Z, a BT50 gear spindle at 6,000 rpm, an 1,800 kg (3,968 lb) table load and weighs 13,000 kg (28,660 lb). The BM-1400II has 650 mm (25.6 in) of Y, 610 mm (24.0 in) of Z, a belt-drive 8,000 rpm BT40 spindle, a 1,400 kg (3,086 lb) table load and weighs 8,100 kg (17,857 lb).

03 What is the largest tool the BM-1400 MAX can change?

The 24-tool magazine takes tools up to 250 mm (9.8 in) long and 15 kg (33 lb). Maximum diameter is Ø105 mm, or Ø210 mm when the adjacent pockets are empty. AWEA also offers 30T and 40T arm type magazines for the series.

04 What are the table size and clearances of the BM-1400 MAX?

The table is 1,500 x 800 mm (59.1 x 31.5 in). Spindle nose to table top distance is 200 ~ 900 mm (7.9 ~ 35.4 in), and the spindle center is 900 mm (35.4 in) from the column. Travels are 1,400 mm (55.1 in), 800 mm (31.5 in) and 700 mm (27.6 in) in X, Y and Z.
