Overview
The Johnford SV-33 opens the SV series: a vertical machining center with 850 x 610 x 610 mm (33.5 x 24 x 24 in) travels, a 1,000 x 600 mm (39.4 x 23.6 in) table and a standard spindle of 60~10,000 rpm in BT or CAT 40 taper. It is close in X travel to the VMC-850, but it is a different class of machine once the other rows are compared.
Start with the table. The SV-33 carries 1,200 kg (2,640 lb), three times the 400 kg (880 lb) of the VMC-850, and it has 610 mm (24 in) of Y where the VMC-850 has 500 mm (19.7 in). The spindle is 640 mm (25.2 in) from the column. A square Y and Z of 610 mm each makes the machine useful for plates, mold inserts and fixture cubes, not only for long narrow work.
The standard drive is a 9 / 11 kW (12.1 / 14.8 hp) P motor, quoted as continuous and 30 min ratings. Johnford then lists three other spindles: a 12,000 rpm cartridge spindle with a 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) Hi-Lo gear drive, a 15,000 rpm direct drive spindle in BBT-40, and a built-in HSK A63 spindle at 15,000, 18,000 or 20,000 rpm with 17 / 20 kW (22.8 / 26.8 hp). The gear option is the one for torque; the built-in spindle is the one for small tools.
A 24-tool armless changer, rigid tapping, an oil cooler for the spindle and gearbox, and four screw type chip conveyors with a trolley are standard. The machine weighs 6,500 kg (14,300 lb) and measures 2,680 x 3,420 x 2,888 mm (105.5 x 134.6 x 113.7 in), so it is deeper than it is long.
