Overview

The AWEA BM-1400II gives 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of X travel on the narrow BM-II casting, with 650 mm (25.6 in) of Y and 610 mm (24.0 in) of Z. A 1,500 x 650 mm (59.1 x 25.6 in) table rated for 1,400 kg (3,086 lb) makes it the highest-capacity BM-II before the frame widens at the BM-1500II.

AWEA's range holds three machines with exactly this X stroke, and they serve different shops. The AF-1400II has the same travels and the same 8,100 kg (17,857 lb) weight but runs on linear guide ways with a 12,000 rpm spindle and a 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) table. The BM-1400 MAX keeps the box ways and adds a gear spindle, 800 mm (31.5 in) of Y and a weight of 13,000 kg (28,660 lb). The BM-1400II sits between them: box-way damping and a higher table load than the AF, without the mass and floor loading of the MAX.

Its spindle is the series' belt-drive 8,000 rpm unit with a 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) motor, BT40 or optional BT50. Feed figures are 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) for X and Y rapids, 24 m/min (945 ipm) for Z and 1 - 15 m/min (39 - 591 ipm) for cutting.

This is the last size on which Y-axis chip augers are listed as standard. The coolant tank holds 390 liter. Power requirement remains 25 kVA, unchanged from the smallest model, and the control is the FANUC Oi -MF Plus.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,400 kg (3,086 lb) table load, more than the 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) of the AF-1400II with the same travels
  • 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of X travel on box ways
  • Y-axis chip augers standard, the largest BM-II size to have them listed
  • Same 25 kVA requirement as the smallest BM-II machine
  • 8,100 kg (17,857 lb), well under the 13,000 kg (28,660 lb) of the BM-1400 MAX

Limitations

  • Y travel of 650 mm (25.6 in); the BM-1400 MAX gives 800 mm (31.5 in)
  • Belt-drive 8,000 rpm spindle with a 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) motor, not the gear spindle of the MAX models
  • Tool weight limit of 7 kg (15 lb), against 15 kg (33 lb) on the BM-1400 MAX
  • Rapids of 30 m/min (1,181 ipm), slower than the 48 m/min (1,890 ipm) AF-1400II
06

Best For

Long steel parts and weldments up to 1,400 kg (3,086 lb) Die shoes and plates about 1,400 x 650 mm Heavy milling on a moderate floor loading Shops choosing box ways over speed in this travel

Frequently Asked Questions

01 BM-1400II, BM-1400 MAX or AF-1400II: which AWEA 1,400 mm machine is which?

The BM-1400II is a box-way machine with 650 mm (25.6 in) of Y, an 8,000 rpm belt-drive spindle and a 1,400 kg (3,086 lb) table. The BM-1400 MAX has 800 mm (31.5 in) of Y, a 6,000 rpm gear spindle and weighs 13,000 kg (28,660 lb). The AF-1400II uses linear guide ways with a 12,000 rpm direct-drive spindle and 48 m/min (1,890 ipm) rapids.

02 What is the table size and load of the BM-1400II?

The table is 1,500 x 650 mm (59.1 x 25.6 in) and is rated for 1,400 kg (3,086 lb). AWEA describes a double ribbed table design intended to keep it from deforming under heavy loads over time.

03 What tools can the BM-1400II magazine take?

The 24-tool arm type magazine accepts tools up to 250 mm (9.8 in) long and 7 kg (15 lb). Diameter is limited to Ø75 mm with adjacent pockets occupied and Ø150 mm with them empty. A shortcut tool change function is standard, and an ultra fast tool exchange system is listed as an option.

04 How accurate is the BM-1400II?

AWEA lists positioning accuracy of 0.008 mm and repeatability of 0.006 mm under ISO230-2. The maker points to hand-scraped contact surfaces, dual-nut ball screws and directly coupled FANUC αi absolute servo motors as the basis for those figures.
