Overview

Hartford's HCMC-1682 is a 50-taper box-guideway vertical machining center with 1,600 mm (63.0 in) of X travel and 820 mm (32.3 in) of Y. The table is 1,750 x 820 mm (68.9 x 32.3 in) and takes an average load of 2,200 kg (4,850 lb).

Z travel is a choice on this model. The row reads 660 opt. 820 mm: the standard column gives 660 mm and a taller version 820 mm. Which one to order depends on the work. Deep die cavities and tall fixtures on a fourth axis need the longer stroke, while flat plate work is better served by the shorter, stiffer arrangement.

The spindle is driven through Hartford's own two-step gearbox at 4,000 / 6,000 / 8,000 rpm, or directly as a DDS unit at 10,000 / 12,000 rpm. Motor ratings start at 11 / 15 kW, one step above the HCMC-1370's base motor, and go to 15 / 18.5 kW and 22 / 26 kW as options (Cont. / 30 min).

A box-way machine of this size moves a heavy saddle and table, and Hartford addresses that in three ways: guideway spacing on X increased by 35% so the table does not overhang, a counterweighted Z axis, and the Air Suspension function. Dual screws on the base carry chips away. The magazine is an arm type with 24 tools, or 30, 32 or 40.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,600 x 820 mm X/Y travel on box guideways with a #50 spindle
  • Z travel of 660 mm with an 820 mm option
  • Table load of 2,200 kg (4,850 lb)
  • Base motor of 11 / 15 kW, with 15 / 18.5 kW and 22 / 26 kW options (Cont. / 30 min)
  • Dual chip screws on the base and 35% wider X guideway spacing, per Hartford

Limitations

  • The 820 mm Z travel is an option, not the standard build
  • Spindle speed is limited to 12,000 rpm with the DDS head and 8,000 rpm with the gear head
  • #50 only; for a #40 spindle at this size Hartford offers the linear-guide MVP-16
  • No published rapid traverse or cutting feed rates

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What Z travel does the Hartford HCMC-1682 have?

The table lists 660 opt. 820 mm, so 660 mm is standard and 820 mm is an option. X travel is 1,600 mm (63.0 in) and Y travel is 820 mm (32.3 in).

02 How much can the HCMC-1682 table carry?

An average load of 2,200 kg (4,850 lb) on a table of 1,750 x 820 mm (68.9 x 32.3 in). Hartford says the X-axis guideway spacing was increased by 35% so that the table is not left overhanging with heavier workpieces.

03 What spindle speeds and power does the HCMC-1682 offer?

Gear head: 4,000 / 6,000 / 8,000 rpm. DDS: 10,000 / 12,000 rpm. Both are #50 with BT50 shanks. The motor is 11 / 15 kW, optionally 15 / 18.5 kW or 22 / 26 kW, as continuous / 30 min ratings.

04 What is the difference between the HCMC-1682 and the HCMC-2082?

Length. The HCMC-2082 has 2,060 mm (81.1 in) of X travel, a 2,150 x 820 mm (84.6 x 32.3 in) table and a 2,600 kg (5,732 lb) load rating. Y travel, the Z options, spindles, motors and magazine are the same as on the HCMC-1682.
