Overview

Largest of the MVP family, the Hartford MVP-16 has 1,600 mm (63.0 in) of X travel, 820 mm (32.3 in) of Y and a 1,750 x 820 mm (68.9 x 32.3 in) table that carries 2,000 kg (4,409 lb). It is offered with a #40 or a #50 spindle.

The Z axis is where this model departs from its siblings. Hartford's Z travel row reads 700 (linear guideway) / 660 opt 820 (box guideway) mm. In other words the buyer chooses the Z construction: a linear guideway with 700 mm of stroke, or a box guideway with 660 mm, extendable to 820 mm. A box-way Z under a #50 gear spindle suits heavy roughing; the linear version suits speed.

For #50 the spindles are a gear type at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm and a DDS type at 10,000 / 12,000 rpm. The motor row for #50 prints 11 / 15 with options of 15 / 18.5, 18.5 / 22 and 22 / 26, without a unit. For #40 the pulley spindle runs 8,000 / 10,000 / 12,000 rpm and the DDS spindle 10,000 / 12,000 / 15,000 / 20,000 rpm, driven by 7.5 / 11 kW or optionally 11 / 15 kW or 15 / 18.5 kW (Cont. / 30 min).

Tooling is BT40, with HSK A63 among the alternatives, or BT50. The arm-type magazine holds 24 tools, with 30 and 40 listed in brackets. Stated accuracy under MGPS is positioning within 8μm and repeatability within 5μm.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Z axis available with a linear guideway (700 mm) or a box guideway (660 mm, optionally 820 mm)
  • #50 gear spindle at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm or #50 DDS spindle at 10,000 / 12,000 rpm
  • Table of 1,750 x 820 mm (68.9 x 32.3 in) with a 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) load rating
  • Y travel of 820 mm (32.3 in), the largest in the MVP series
  • Magazine of 24 tools with 30 or 40 as listed alternatives

Limitations

  • The box-guideway Z has less standard stroke (660 mm) than the linear-guideway Z (700 mm)
  • The #50 motor ratings are printed without a unit on the maker's page
  • X and Y run on linear guideways only; Hartford's all-box-way machine of similar size is the HCMC-1682
  • No rapid traverse rates or tool size limits are published

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What Z travel does the Hartford MVP-16 have?

It depends on the Z-axis construction. The table reads 700 (linear guideway) / 660 opt 820 (box guideway) mm: 700 mm with a linear guideway, or 660 mm with a box guideway and 820 mm as its option. X travel is 1,600 mm (63.0 in) and Y travel is 820 mm (32.3 in).

02 Is the MVP-16 a 40-taper or a 50-taper machine?

Either. The spindle rows list #40 and #50, and the tool shank row reads BT40 (BBT / CAT / DIN / HSK A63) or BT50 (BBT / CAT / DIN). The #50 spindles are a gear type at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm and a DDS type at 10,000 / 12,000 rpm.

03 What spindle motors are listed for the MVP-16?

For #40: 7.5 / 11 kW with 11 / 15 kW and 15 / 18.5 kW as options, as continuous / 30 min ratings. For #50 the page prints 11 / 15 with options of 15 / 18.5, 18.5 / 22 and 22 / 26, and leaves the unit column empty.

04 When is the HCMC-1682 a better choice than the MVP-16?

When all three axes should be box ways. The HCMC-1682 is a box-guideway machine with the same 1,600 mm (63.0 in) X and 820 mm (32.3 in) Y travel, a #50 gear spindle at 4,000 / 6,000 / 8,000 rpm and a 2,200 kg (4,850 lb) table load. The MVP-16 is the faster, linear-guide alternative.
